Synopsis
Jean-Claude Delsart (Patrick Chesnais) est huissier. Quinquagénaire divorcé, il vit seul et sa seule occupation le week-end est de visiter son vieux père acariâtre (Georges Wilson) à la maison de retraite et dont il a repris l'étude. Un jour, il est victime d'un malaise bénin et le docteur lui conseille de faire du sport. Jean-Claude s'inscrit alors à un cours de tango qu'il lorgne, chaque jour, par la fenêtre de son bureau. Il y rencontre Françoise (Anne Consigny), conseillère d'orientation. Malgré la différence d'âge, la profession de Jean-Claude (huissier) et le mariage prochain de Françoise avec son fiancé, ils sont irrésistiblement attirés l'un vers l'autre.Actors

The film is essentially a two-part program. The first half consists of a romantic comedy storyline involving an aerialist, played by Gene Kelly, who is drafted into the US Army but really wants to join the air force. During training, he falls in love with Kathryn (played by Kathryn Grayson), the daughter of his commanding officer, who has similarly put her singing career on hold in order to serve by providing entertainment for the troops. Unusually for this type of a film (and for this era of Hollywood), the character Kathryn has only recently met her father for the first time since she was a baby, her parents having divorced. A related subplot has Kathryn conniving to get her parents (played by John Boles and Mary Astor) to reconcile. During the first part of the film, Grayson sings several numbers and Kelly performs one of his most famous routines, dancing with a mop as a partner.

Anthony "Tony" Manero (John Travolta) is a 19-year-old Italian American man from the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn in New York City. Over-worked, bullied and terrified of being put in foster care, seventeen-year-old Katie Gibbs (Lucy Hale) is a singer who does her stepmother and stepsiblings' bidding with no complaints. She's constantly harassed by Gail, her stepmother. The film starts in a dream where she performs a music video for her hit single ("Run This Town"). Her stepbrother, Victor (Matthew Lintz) then wakes her up demanding breakfast. But temptation soon shows up in the form of Maria's ex-boyfriend Luis, the leader of the 718 crew, and a fierce dancer who doesn't take competition lightly. Recognizing her one chance to break free of Luis' influence and stay positive, Maria joins the HD's and prepares to go toe-to-toe with reigning champs the 718's on national television. If Maria and her new crew can just come out on top, she'll finally be able to cut her ties from the past, and follow in the footsteps of her idol Honey.

The movie is set in London in 1914, on the eve of World War I (and the year Chaplin made his first film). Calvero (Chaplin), once a famous stage clown but now a washed-up drunk, saves a young dancer, Thereza "Terry" Ambrose, (Claire Bloom), from suicide. Nursing her back to health, Calvero helps Terry regain her self-esteem and resume her dancing career. In doing so he regains his own self-confidence, but his attempts to make a comeback meet with failure. Terry says she wants to marry Calvero despite their age difference, although she has befriended Neville (Sydney Earl Chaplin), a young composer Calvero believes would be better suited to her. In order to give them a chance, Calvero leaves home and becomes a street entertainer. Terry, now starring in her own show, eventually finds Calvero and persuades him to return to the stage for a benefit concert. Reunited with an old partner (Keaton), Calvero gives a triumphant comeback performance. He suffers a heart attack during a routine, however, and dies in the wings while watching Terry, the second act on the bill, dance on stage.
