During the Second World War, the British government hands out a top-secret mission to two look-alikes, an airman and a secret agent (both played by Rix). The airman is instructed to impersonate the agent to confuse the Germans, while the real agent must enter occupied France to spy on the new buzz bombs. Unfortunately, their orders get mixed up and the airman ends up in France. When he is accidentally fired back to England inside one of the defused bombs, the airman becomes a national hero. Meanwhile the real agent tries in vain to prove his true identity.

When unscrupulous Brighton antiques dealer Cecil Gibson (Ronald Shiner) dies, his widow Julie (Dora Bryan) remarries, and she and new husband Bertie (Brian Rix) go off on honeymoon. But they are chased by a gangster because of a fake antique bed that the late Cecil pawned off for quick cash. Three British naval officers out on a drunken spree attach a pram and a pawnbroker's sign to the stern of a foreign naval ship. The House of Lords is a grocery shop that sits on the South Bank of the river Thames close to the site of Festival Hall which is noisily under construction. It is owned by the Lord family, a husband and wife with several children. Major Bright and Captain Early are intelligence officers in the British army of occupation in post-World War 2 Germany. They are sent home on leave, but fail to notice that their new batman is actually wanted war criminal Otto Fisch. He vanishes on arrival in England and the two officers are punished by early demobilisation. Uncertain what to do in civvy street, they decide to utilise the "skills" they learned in the army and set up a private detective agency, "Bright and Early". They engage a secretary, Primrose Brown, but she's not very busy as they have as yet no clients.
