Nothing but the Best is a 1964 British comedy film directed by Clive Donner based on the 1952 short story 'The Best of Everything' by Stanley Ellin.
Synopsis
James, a young man starting with a large West End firm of estate agents and auctioneers, is ambitious to get to the top. In a cheap café he meets Charles, a drunken layabout who has everything James wants: effortless upper-class arrogance and impeccable tailoring. In return for a room to live in and loans for drink and betting, Charles agrees to tutor James in the life skills he needs to succeed. By bluff and sabotage James rises in his firm, catching the eye of the owner and of his only daughter Ann. Disaster threatens when Charles has a big win and decides to end the deal. James hastily strangles him and his landlady agrees to hide the corpse in her cellar in return for continuing sexual comfort. After long courtship, Ann agrees to marry James and her father makes him a partner in the business. Having conveniently sent his lower middle-class parents to Australia, his success will be crowned by a grand society wedding. Ann's father then confesses that he has a totally disreputable son they never see called Charles and developers who have bought the house of James's former landlady find a corpse in the cellar.Actors

The film opens with a funeral procession, presumably that of Jacob Marley, as his death is mentioned by the narrator (Roger Rees). The scene then changes to seven years later, on Christmas Eve in 1843 within the business establishment of Scrooge and Marley. Bob Cratchit (David Warner), a clerk employed by Scrooge, comments that Marley has been dead for seven years, but is gruffly ordered to return to work by Marley's surviving partner, Ebenezer Scrooge (George C. Scott). Bob then attempts to add some coal to an almost nonexistent fire, but is stopped by Scrooge, who gives him a curt and cutting lecture on clothing as protection against the cold, and that "coal burns; coal is fleeting, and coal is costly". Scrooge then declares that there will be no more coal burned in the office that day, and orders Cratchit to return to work lest he be fired.

About to nervously jump off a bridge, scrawny Harry Berlin (Jack Lemmon) is a barely functional human being. Abelard is a famous teacher of philosophy at the cathedral school of Notre Dame, and a champion of reason, at a time when academics are required to observe chastity. He falls in love with one of his students, Héloïse d'Argenteuil, a sixteen-year-old gentlewoman raised in a convent, who has both intellectual curiosity and a rebellious view of the low status of women in 12th century Europe. When the relationship is suspected, Heloise's uncle Fulbert, who had other plans for her marriage, works with the bishop of Paris to put a stop to it. Aston invite Davies chez lui (une pièce unique encombrée d'un bric-à-brac) après l'avoir tiré d'une dispute dans un café. Davies finit par accepter l'offre d'Aston de l'héberger temporairement, n'ayant ni argent, ni domicile, ni papiers. Il se révèle vite être un vieil homme opportuniste, parasitique et peu amène, se plaignant de tout et volontiers raciste. Mick, propriétaire de la maison dans laquelle vit son frère Aston, semble irrité par l'intrusion de Davies et le rudoie. Aston propose à Davies d'être gardien de l'immeuble mais sa patience finit par s'user devant l'égoïsme du vieil homme. Davies tente alors d'obtenir l'appui de Mick contre son frère, mais la manœuvre échoue. À la fin de la pièce Davies en appelle à nouveau à Aston mais il est clair que ce sera en vain.
