Oasis / Oase is a 1955 French/German adventure film directed by Yves Allégret. It was based on novel by Joseph Kessel who co-wrote screenplay with Ben Barzman and Georges Kessel. The film stars Michèle Morgan, Cornell Borchers, Carl Raddatz and Pierre Brasseur.

It tells the story of two female smugglers and an inexperienced gold smuggler.

Synopsis

Un groupe de négociants en or veut se débarrasser d'un trafiquant, Antoine Vallin, installé dans une oasis saharienne, qui leur porte préjudice. Deux jeunes femmes sans scrupules sont engagées pour le surveiller, une Française, Françoise Lignières, et une Suédoise, Karine Salstroem. Karine devient rapidement la maîtresse du trafiquant, mais c'est finalement Françoise, séduite par l'humanité de Vallin, qui parviendra à le sauver de la mort.

À la fin des années, Robert Adamson, un ingénieur pour la Mombassa Railroad Company, voyage vers l'Afrique pour travailler au chemin de fer qui traverse le veld en direction du Lac Victoria. Sur le même bateau, se trouvent Jane Carlton, à la recherche de son père et de son fiancé qui travaillaient pour la même compagnie et qui sont portés disparus, et Pasha, un jeune Arabe qui retourne chez lui après des études en Angleterre. Jane et Robert sont accueillis à Mombasa par "Hooky" Hook. Ce dernier leur explique qu'ils ont disparu près du territoire d'une tribu hostile, les Warush. Lorsque Hooky suggère que des esclavagistes arabes puissent être impliqués, Robert décide d'aller voir leur chef Ben Ahmed. Il y est accueilli par Pasha, qui s'avère être le fils de Ben Ahmed. Robert est reçu par Ben Ahmed et Gunther, qui construit une ligne de chemins de fer concurrente dans le but de transporter des esclaves vers la côte. Robert demande à Ben Ahmed de l'aider à recruter des porteurs mais ce dernier refuse et propose au contraire à Robert de travailler pour eux. Robert rejette leur offre et s'en va.

Durant la Troisième guerre punique, alors que le consul Scipion Émilien débarque sur les côtes d'Afrique, la ville de Carthage connait de plus en plus de problèmes face aux Romains. À l'intérieur même de la cité, les Carthaginois sont partagés, certains voulant lutter jusqu'à la mort, d'autres préférant traiter avec l'ennemi. Hermon lui-même, suffète à la tête du Grand Conseil de la cité, hésite sur la conduite à adopter. Phégor, le chef de la garde sacrée, est favorable aux négociations avec les Romains qui souhaitent détruire Carthage et reconstruire une nouvelle cité plus éloignée de la côte afin de réduire à néant la puissance maritime de la rivale de Rome tandis qu'Hiram, chef militaire de Carthage, pense qu'il faut défendre la ville contre les Romains et doit s'exiler pour échapper à la mort. Il laisse sa fiancée Ophir, la fille d'Hermon, menacée aussi par l'avancée romaine. Hiram revient à Carthage afin de sauver Fulvia, une romaine qui lui a jadis sauvé la vie et que le grand prêtre s'apprête à sacrifier sur l'autel de Baal-Moloch en raison de la haine du peuple pour les Romains. Hiram s'enfuit ensuite sur le navire de son ami Sidon mais Phégor qui voulait faire de Fulvia son épouse se lance à leur poursuite à bord de la dernière trirème que Rome a laissé à la flotte carthaginoise. Hiram revient ensuite enlever Ophir qui s'apprêtait à épouser Tsour, son ami d'enfance, car Hermon ne voulait pas que sa fille épouse Hiram bannit. L'armée carthaginoise commandée par Hasdrubal le Boétharque est définitivement vaincue par les légions romaines. Phégor trahit la cité dans le but d'éviter les morts tandis qu'Hiram qui plaide la cause de la défense de la ville est autorisé à rentrer à Carthage, il défend la cité contre les Romains mais vaincu, il doit fuir par la mer. Hiram et Ophir seront sauvés et verront de leur bateau la destruction de Carthage par les flammes.

Several plot elements bring the characters together in search (and pursuit) of the Guatemalan idol known as The Green Goddess: Tarzan's friend D'Arnot has crash landed in the region and is in the hands of a lost tribe of jungle natives. Major Martling is leading an expedition to find the fabled artefact for a powerful explosives formula hidden within it. Ula Vale's fiancé died in an earlier expedition to rescue the artefact for its archaeological benefit and so she starts one of her own in his honour. Raglan has been sent by Hiram Powers, Ula's lawyer, to steal the valuable idol for himself - in addition to containing the explosives formula, it also holds a fortune in jewels.Tarzan, Ula and Major Martling find the idol and rescue D'Arnot from the natives that worship it in the 70-minute-long first episode. However, Raglan escapes with the Green Goddess and heads through the jungle for the coast. Tarzan and the others pursue him across the jungle, encountering many perils, including recapture by the natives to whom the idol belonged. The adventures end out at sea where, during a hurricane, they are able to permanently secure the idol while Raglan is killed by another of Powers' agents because of his failures. The murderer perishes when the ship sinks. Returning to Greystoke Manor in England with Tarzan, Ula consigns the explosives formula to fire in the final episode, where she and Tarzan also recount several adventures from the first part of the serial to an assembled party of friends and colleagues.

Jill Young is seen as a child at the beginning of the film when she witnesses the death of her mother, Ruth Young (Linda Purl), and the mother of Joe, an infant mountain gorilla, at the hands of poachers led by Andrei Strasser (Rade Šerbedžija). Strasser loses both his right thumb and trigger finger to Joe, and swears revenge on the gorilla for the damage. Before she dies, Ruth tells Jill to take care of Joe, to which Jill agrees. Twelve years later, Jill has raised Joe who, because of a rare genetic anomaly, has now grown to a height of 16 1/2-feet (5 meters) and weighs 2,200 pounds (1,000 kilograms). As a result, the other gorillas won't accept him and both are now living in relative peace until a wildlife refuge director, Gregg O'Hara (Bill Paxton), convinces Jill that they would be safer from poachers if they relocate to the United States.

In 1798, Napoleon I has launched an invasion of Egypt. A frail and elderly artist, Jean-Michel Venture de Paradis (Michel Piccoli), has been commissioned by Napoleon to sketch the landscape and monuments of Egypt. French soldier Augustin Robert (Ben Daniels) has been assigned to keep Venture from being harassed by the other soldiers, but the unrelenting burden of this task soon takes its toll on Augustin. Mameluks attack the regiment's small encampment. In the aftermath, Augustin and Venture are now separated from their regiment. Walking in the arid landscape, under the blaze of the desert sun, they begin to suffer an unquenchable thirst, and Augustin is infuriated when the artist uses the last of their water to mix his paints.
