South of the U.S. border, Don José Tostado, a Mexican cabellero, falls in love with Dolores Romero, a dance-hall girl. Cantor Rabinowitz wants his son to carry on the generations-old family tradition and become a cantor at the synagogue in the Jewish ghetto of Manhattan's Lower East Side. But down at the beer garden, thirteen-year-old Jakie Rabinowitz is performing so-called jazz tunes. Moisha Yudelson spots the boy and tells Jakie's father, who drags him home. Jakie clings to his mother, Sara, as his father declares, "I'll teach him better than to debase the voice God gave him!" Jakie threatens: "If you whip me again, I'll run away — and never come back!" After the whipping, Jakie kisses his mother goodbye and, true to his word, runs away. At the Yom Kippur service, Rabinowitz mournfully tells a fellow celebrant, "My son was to stand at my side and sing tonight – but now I have no son." As the sacred Kol Nidre is sung, Jakie sneaks back home to retrieve a picture of his loving mother.

At the behest of her ultra-conservative fiancé Warren, scatterbrained five-pack-a-day chain smoker and clairvoyant Daisy Gamble attends a class taught by psychiatrist Marc Chabot for help in kicking her habit. It has been one year since the events of The Swan Princess, but Derek and Odette's anniversary is interrupted by the vandalism of Knuckles, minion of the wizard Clavius. Clavius was the partner of Rothbart, villain of the previous film; the pair conquered the Forbidden Arts together until Rothbart drove Clavius underground after betraying their partnership. Clavius now wants to claim the magical orb of the Forbidden Arts that is located somewhere in Swan Lake castle, which has become the new home of Derek and Odette. The film opens with Ah Peng (Mo Zijiang), an ethnic Bai, on his way to a festival in Dali City, Yunnan. Along the way he meets Jinhua (played by the sixteen-year-old Yang Likun) who needs help to fix her wagon. Ah Peng helps her and later goes on to win the horse race at the festival. Impressed with his skill and kindness Jinhua falls in love with him. Ah Peng and Jinhua agree to meet one year thence, but when Ah Peng returns he cannot find her. He and his companions search for Jinhua (which is a common Chinese name for both sexes), and come across four other women named Jinhua — a steelworker, a tractor driver, a herder and a fertilizer maker — before he eventually finds his love, who works as a commune director. After some initial confusion, the two get married and there is a final chorus under the Butterfly Spring.
