Once Upon a Time in the East (French: Il était une fois dans l'est) is a 1974 Canadian drama film directed by André Brassard. It was entered into the 1974 Cannes Film Festival.

The film is based on several plays by Michel Tremblay, weaving characters from the plays Les Belles-sœurs, Hosanna, La duchesse de Langeais and À toi, pour toujours, ta Marie-Lou into an original ensemble cast story.

Synopsis

L’action se déroule dans le milieu des travestis de la « Main » à Montréal. Reprenant certains personnages et les thèmes du théâtre de Tremblay, tels qu’ils étaient développés à l’époque, l’intrigue suit deux parcours parallèles. Germaine Lauzon est l’heureuse gagnante de boîtes de timbres à coller. Elle regroupe chez elle des belle-sœurs, voisines et amies pour l’aider à coller ses timbres dans les livrets. Hosanna réalise son désir fabuleux de se transformer en Cléopâtre pour un concours au cabaret de travestie qu’elle fréquente. Elle ignore qu’on lui a tendu un piège, avec la complicité de Cuirette, pour se venger d’elle et la ridiculiser. Pendant que Hosanna se fait humilier, Germaine Lauzon se fait voler ses timbres, toutes deux trahies par leurs supposées amies. Le récit concert à deux voies se présente comme une évocation noire et forte de l’impasse humaine.

Être fictif à qui 24 femmes et un homme (travesti) prêtent leur visage, Françoise Durocher possède à la fois les traits de la petite serveuse, de l'hôtesse et de la barmaid. Gary (not his real name, which is never revealed) is a hustler walking through the streets of New York City, looking for business. On the way, he saves a young deaf transvestite from a group of gay bashers, but regrets it afterwards because the transvestite becomes infatuated with Gary and follows him everywhere. Gary introduces the transvestite to his friends: Valentino, a former porn star, and Mary Carmen, the Latina who works as a doughnut shop waitress and is in love with Valentino, with whom she has been living for some time. Together they form a bohemian family, which includes Veronica, a still-active porn star, and Nat, a tattoo artist. Gary is also in love with Valentino, who is dying of AIDS. Through the stages of the disease, Mary Carmen and Gary argue over what kind of care he should be receiving, and who is going to supply that care. As Valentino draws near death, Mary Carmen finds out she is carrying Valentino's baby. The three take stock of themselves and their relationships with one another.

Grace Beasley has been content with life as a housewife. One morning, Grace wins tickets to a concert by her favorite singer.
