Raymond HattonAs described in a film magazine, Maggie Pepper (Clayton) is a self-reliant and snappy saleswoman who supports a young girl Claire (Wilson), the daughter of her sister-in-law Ada (Greenwood), who is in jail for shoplifting. Maggie is being courted by Jake Rothschild (Hatton) and has just rejected him when the young owner of the store, Joe Holbrook (Dexter), comes upon them. She mistakes Joe for a job seeker and advises him to stay away from a concern that is dying painlessly. Joe becomes interested and finds that the peppery young woman has ideas and vision. He is already engaged, but finds that the comparison of the women favors Maggie. Maggie, the victim of envy, is discharged. Her sister-in-law Ada, now released and led back to crime by a second husband Sam (Marshall), plans to do shoplifting at the Holbrook store. Maggie only wants the child to be free from bad influences, and accepts a job offer in Pittsburgh to get a better environment. There is a sensational attempt to steal the child, which brings Holbrook to the rescue. He feigns injury to keep a hold on Maggie, and ends up winning her.![Nearly Married](/imagesen/small/76982.jpg)

Alma TellAs described in a film magazine, on the evening of Betty Griffon's (Kennedy) scheduled wedding the guests are assembled, the minister is waiting, but no bride appears. Betty is waiting for her brother Dick (Barthelmess), who is out celebrating his admission to the bar. When it dawns on him that it is his duty to give his sister away in marriage, he rushes out, steals an automobile, and is arrested. Betty and Harry Lindsey (Thomas) are married and are about to leave on their honeymoon when word comes of Dick's arrest. Harry is disgusted by Dick and leaves the house. Dick, anxious to secure a legal case, urges his sister to get a divorce. Legal proceedings are instituted but before the granting of the decree the couple find that they still love each other so plan to elope. The arrival of Dick with the divorce decree upsets this plan. They start to make another attempt at marriage but discover that, due to the insertion of a clause in the decree by Betty, they cannot get remarried in New York. The couple then plan to get married in New Jersey, but Betty finds Harry's hired co-respondent for the divorce in his room, so Betty refuses to accompany him. Utterly disgusted, Harry is about to leave when Betty denounces her brother and begs Harry to take her with him, which he does.

In Vienna, Baroness Teri von Horhenfels (Kay Francis) relieves the boredom of her marriage to her rich but dull husband (Henry Kolker) with love affairs. One day, at an exclusive jewel shop to purchase a diamond ring, her tedium is lifted by a suave, charming thief (William Powell) and his gang. In turn, he is entranced by her beauty. He locks her husband and her latest lover, Paul (Hardie Albright) (of whom she has already tired), in the vault, and forces shop owner Hollander (Lee Kohlmar) to smoke a special cigarette that soon makes him forget his troubles. She however persuades him into leaving her free. However, he is not so carried away as to neglect his duties; he takes her ring, all 28 carats (5.6 g) of it.
