In a region in the east of France, Pierrette, (Dominique Labourier), a young mill worker devotes herself totally to her trade union activity even to the detriment of her private life. She has separated from her husband and left her child in the care of a relative. Two men enter into her life. She crosses first the path of an émigré Italian, nicknamed Beau Masque, (Luigi Diberti), a truck driver. Then, at the time of a dance organised by the French Communist Party, she makes the acquaintance of Philippe Letourneau (Jean-Claude Dauphin), the factory director. He is the young 'son of the family', pushed into the business by his parents who are majority shareholders. Though attracted to Philippe, Pierrette takes no action, not wanting to compromise her union activity. It is with Beau Masque that she begins a relationship. But a wave of redundancies, that the director does not control, is going to throw the protagonists towards a final drama.

The bucolic beauty of Greece's Ionian islands has been invaded by Italy, bringing a large Italian garrison and a few Germans to the tranquil island of Cephallonia, which immediately surrenders. Captain Antonio Corelli, a Greek-speaking officer of the Italian 33rd Acqui Infantry Division with an irrepressibly jovial personality and a passion for the mandolin, and who trains his battery of men – who have never fired a shot – in choral singing, initially alienates a number of the villagers, including Pelagia. The daughter of the village doctor, Pelagia, is an educated and strong-willed woman, and while at first offended by the Italian soldier's behaviour, she slowly warms to his certain charm as they are forced to share her father's home when the doctor agrees to put him up in exchange for medical supplies.

Religious and meek postal service worker John Paul George (Kevin Downes), named after three members of The Beatles, has never met his father, Stephen, (Sean McGowan), because he died somehow during the Vietnam War in 1969. While rummaging through the garage of his recently deceased mother's house, he comes across a box of his father's war belongings and finds a letter mentioning "Eddie J. Adams", (Scott Whyte), his best friend from Vietnam. Curious, John starts calling people in the country with the name, eventually coming across someone who seems to recognize the name. John travels to Mississippi, where he finds that the person he spoke with on the phone was actually Edward's son, Wayne Adams, (David A.R. White), a reclusive, strange and ill-tempered hermit. John tells Wayne that he came to Mississippi to learn more about his father from Wayne. Wayne reveals that he has many letters from his father, most of which detail John's father, who got him to rediscover his cynical, misguided faith. Later that night, Wayne impulsively cuts the roof off his 1965 Ford Thunderbird to "make it a convertible for a road trip". Confused and angered because his wedding to his fiancee Cynthia, (Candace Cameron Bure) is in a matter of weeks, John protests the trip, preferring to just read the letters at Wayne's house. Wayne is insistent, however, that they go on the long and arduous road trip to visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. to see their fathers' names on The Wall and get closure. Despite clashing many times over many things, such as Wayne getting into a fight with rowdy gas station patrons and John being forced to pay for the letters if he wants to read them, on the trip they learn more about their fathers and themselves.
