Love of a Clown, or Pagliacci, is a 1948 Italian film based on Ruggero Leoncavallo's opera Pagliacci, directed by Mario Costa. The film stars Tito Gobbi and Gina Lollobrigida. It recounts the tragedy of Canio, the lead clown (or pagliaccio in Italian) in a commedia dell'arte troupe, his wife Nedda, and her lover, Silvio. When Nedda spurns the advances of Tonio, another player in the troupe, he tells Canio about Nedda's betrayal. In a jealous rage Canio murders both Nedda and Silvio. The only actor in the cast who also sang his role was the celebrated Italian baritone, Tito Gobbi, but the film is largely very faithful to its source material, presenting the opera nearly complete.

The film premiered on 16 April 1950 in the USA. It is notable for having been filmed largely in outdoor settings, much like a big-budgeted film version of a Broadway musical.

Nemorino est amoureux d'Adina, mais il est sûr que c’est Belcore qu'elle aime. Dulcamara le persuade d'acheter un philtre d'amour magique, mais ce n’est que du vin qu’il lui vend. Adina accepte d'épouser Belcore, mais c’est pour provoquer Nemorino, qui ne s’en rend pas compte. Nemorino embrasse la carrière militaire pour gagner plus d'argent afin d’acheter davantage de potion magique. Il ne sait pas qu'il a hérité d'une grande fortune alors que tout le village est au courant. Les filles du village courent après lui, ce qui le convainc qu’on peut se fier à la potion magique. Adina rompt son engagement avec Belcore et avoue son amour à Nemorino.

In the prologue, Hoffmann is in the audience at a performance by Stella, a prima ballerina. Stella sends Hoffmann a note asking him to meet her after the performance, but the note is intercepted by his rival, Councillor Lindorf. Not having received her note, Hoffmann goes to the tavern in the interval, where he tells the story of a clown, Kleinzach and three stories of his past loves — Olympia, Giulietta and Antonia, and gets drunk.
