Synopsis
L'intrigue est située dans le futur, en 2004, et se déroule dans un pays fictif d'Europe centrale appelé Peraustrínia, entièrement consacré à la science et aux technologies. À cette époque, la technologie a permis de mettre fin aux guerres et à la pauvreté. En revanche, c'est le hasard et l'imagination qui sont en danger de disparaître. De leur côté, les habitants d'un autre pays, l'Empire du hasard, appelés les hasardeux (los azarosos), qui sont des créatures en constante métamorphose et très facétieuses, font leur possible pour semer le chaos dans la société des humains. Mais un jeune savant peraustrinien, Tristán, a mis au point une technologie qui semble lui permettre de contrôler totalement le hasard. Ses agents sont même capables de prévoir l'avenir. L'Empire du hasard est donc en grand danger. Mais une chose échappe encore au contrôle de Tristán : la princesse Priscilla, dont il est amoureux mais qui le déteste. Un jour, l'Empereur des hasardeux offre un accord à Tristán : s'il leur vient en aide, ils l'aideront à se faire aimer de Priscilla.Comments

In the distant future, the gargantuan blue humanoid Draags have brought human beings (who are called Oms as a play on the French word for "man", Homme) from Earth to the planet Ygam, where they maintain a technologically and spiritually advanced society. They consider them animals, and while some Oms are kept as pets by Draags, others live in the strange wilderness and are periodically slaughtered by the Draags who wish to keep their population controlled. Draags have much longer lifespans than Oms, but reproduce much less.

In 3028 A.D., humanity has mastered deep space travel and interacted with several alien species. A human invention called "Project Titan" alarms the Drej, a pure energy-based alien species who attack Earth after breaching the Global Defense System. As the Drej start to attack Earth, Professor Sam Tucker, the lead researcher for "Project Titan", sends his son Cale on one of the evacuation ships with his alien friend Tek while Tucker and other members of his team fly the Titan spacecraft into hyperspace. When the Drej mothership destroys the Earth with an energy beam, the surviving humans become nomads, generally ridiculed by other alien species.

The year is 2078. The planet Sirius 6B, once a thriving mining hub, has been reduced to a toxic wasteland by a civil war between the mining company, known as the New Economic Block (NEB), and the Alliance, a group of former mining and science personnel. Five years into the war, Alliance scientists created and deployed Autonomous Mobile Swords (AMS) — artificially intelligent self-replicating machines that hunt down and kill NEB soldiers on their own. They are nicknamed "screamers" because of a high-pitched noise they emit as they attack. Screamers track targets by their heartbeats, so Alliance soldiers wear "tabs" which broadcast a signal canceling out the wearer's heartbeat and rendering them "invisible" to the machines.
