Synopsis
A Mainland director Nie Wen (Jacky Cheung) decides to make a film musical starring his Mainland girlfriend Sun Na (Zhou Xun) and Hong Kong actor Lin Jian-dong (Takeshi Kaneshiro). Unknown to him, Sun has met Lin before ten years ago when she was a cabaret singer in Beijing. The two had a relationship together then, when Lin was a film student. Ten years later, now a huge movie star, Sun refuses to acknowledge they have met before.Actors

Namson Lau (Andy Lau) est professeur de danse de salon. Enchantée par la prestation de danse de Namson, elle décide de s'inscrire à ses cours, dans l'espoir de réaliser son rêve de danser aussi bien avec lui un jour. Pendant ce temps, Jimmy (Edison Chen), le frère cadet de Tina, confie également à Namson la tâche d'initier sa sœur au tango. Kam travaille dur à temps partiel pour payer ses cours de danse, tandis que Namson travaille à la réalisation de son rêve d'acheter son studio de danse dans Central et de participer au Festival de danse de Blackpool en Angleterre. The film is set in China in the 1860s, during the Taiping Rebellion. It is based on the assassination of Ma Xinyi in 1870. In the beginning, there is a battle between loyal-ists and rebels, during which all of the loyal-ists are killed except Qingyun, the general. Qingyun goes to a village nearby where the inhabitants engage in banditry, being led by two men, Erhu and Wuyang. He offers his assistance in executing a raid against a rebel convoy. However, a loyal-ist army assaults the village shortly afterward and seizes the spoils for themselves. Around this time, Qingyun begins an affair with Erhu's wife.

In 1917 Republican China, Liu Jinxi and his wife Yu are an ordinary couple with two sons, Fangzheng and Xiaotian, living together in Liu Village, Yunnan. One day, two bandits enter the village and attempt to rob the general store. Liu happens to be in the shop, and he fights and kills the robbers when they turn violent. During an autopsy, the detective Xu Baijiu, who is sent to investigate the case, discovers that one of the dead bandits was Yan Dongsheng, who is among the government's ten most wanted fugitives. The local magistrate is pleased, and his fellow villagers regard Liu as a hero.
