In a village in eastern Turkey, tales of the economic success of Turks in Switzerland inspire Haydar to convince his wife Meryem that they must go. He sells their livestock and small plot of land in exchange for passage for two. He wants to leave their seven children in the care of the eldest and his parents; his father advises him to take one son to be educated in Europe, as economic insurance. The three set off for Istanbul, Milan, and Switzerland, stowing away on a ship. At Lake Como, they pay the rest of their money to unprincipled men who abandon them at an Alpine pass before a blizzard. Father and son are separated from Meryem.

Hairdresser Ida, who has recently ended a successful breast cancer treatment, returns home to find her husband Leif cheating on her. At the same time, her daughter is getting married in an Italian villa with a lemon orchard in a few days, and on the way there she runs into Philip, the groom's father. At the wedding, which is eventually called off when the putative bride and groom find that they are not, after all, right for one another, Ida and Philip develop an attraction. On their return to Denmark, Philip decides to reduce his workload and move permanently to Italy. He finds Ida at the hairdressing salon where she works, only to be rebuffed as she has returned to Leif. But Ida then has second thoughts and goes to Italy to be with Philip.

Dev (Dev) is a high school drop out from and a worthless village lad. He is hell bent on getting married. But the girl he wants to marry rejects him stating that he doesn't have college education. Marge Simpson drops off Maggie at the Ayn Rand School for Tots, where, after going through a security screening, she is classified as being of "average intelligence", upon which a guard carries her past the "Room for Gifted Babies" and puts her in the "Nothing Special" dreary corner. The playtime items are either taken away or eaten by the other babies. A butterfly then makes its way into the room as Maggie's nemesis, Baby Gerald, squashes it on the wall with a mallet and draws a box around it with a crayon. A second butterfly also meets the same fate. Maggie finds a caterpillar and a pop-up book about the life cycle of the butterfly. Realizing that the caterpillar could also meet the fate of the first two butterflies, she tries to protect it from Gerald. The caterpillar later encases itself in a chrysalis and starts to transform. Once the newly formed butterfly emerges, Maggie tries to help it fly out of the window, but Gerald kills it by shutting the blinds on it as it attempts to pass through. Maggie acts as if it was the worst thing she has ever seen and mourns as she falls to the floor. Marge then arrives to pick her up, when it is revealed Maggie's scene was only a ruse to cover the truth: she had slipped her hair bow onto the windowsill and wore the butterfly on her forehead in its place. She then sets the butterfly free as Marge drives her home.
