Assistant Chief Francis Tierney (Jon Voight) is the head of a multigenerational police family, which includes his sons Francis, Jr. (Noah Emmerich), Ray (Edward Norton), and his son-in-law Jimmy Egan (Colin Farrell) all being police officers. When four of Francis Jr.'s officers are killed during a shootout turned bad, everything looks straight initially. However, Ray, who is assigned to the investigation, soon discovers something more sinister.
Synopsis
Jimmy Egan (Colin Farrell) leads the New York City Police Department to victory in police-league football. While everybody is celebrating, Francis "Franny'" Tierney Jr. (Noah Emmerich), Jimmy's brother-in-law and superior officer, answers his phone to find out that several men from their unit have been killed during a failed drug bust of a local gang leader, Angel Tezo.Actors

Mike Brennan, a tough, crude, decorated NYPD detective, has a hidden dark side as well as a partnership with certain figures of organized crime. Brennan shoots and kills a small-time Puerto Rican criminal and then threatens witnesses to testify that he acted in self-defense. The film follows a day in the life of Los Angeles Police Department officer, Jake Hoyt, who is scheduled to be evaluated by Detective Alonzo Harris, a highly decorated LAPD narcotics officer. The film begins with two anti-corruption detectives observing the discovery of dead bodies in a car being recovered from the bottom of a harbor. Officer Dave Brown (Harrelson) has two ex-wives who are sisters (Anne Heche and Cynthia Nixon), and he cheated on both. Brown has a daughter from each marriage which creates conflict at home. Dave also has contentious relationships with his children. However, the film starts with his other home, which is the beat. Dave patrols streets occupied by gangs, and he creates problems for himself with increasing severity. Dave forcibly obtains a confession out of a convenience store thief. Later he is caught on tape beating someone almost to death. The beating is still playing on television when he's involved in a suspicious shooting. These incidents get Dave in trouble with an already beleaguered police department, and he faces either sanctions or forced retirement. Dave tries to talk his way out of trouble with an assistant district attorney (Sigourney Weaver). Dave realizes that his superiors are less concerned about what he has done but more concerned about the predicament he has created by getting caught.
