Frankie's loss of hearing is first apparent when he hears a high-pitched whine instead of an Arsenal football match on TV. At this time, Frankie is making his next album with his "two Austrian mates" Alfonse and Horst, who seem more suited for a rock band. Frankie continues working on his album and playing gigs at clubs, but his hearing degrades rapidly. As a result, progress on his album stagnates. However, Frankie refuses to acknowledge his problem until a gig in Amnesia, when he cannot hear the second channel in his headphones and must crossfade one song into the next without being able to beatmatch them. The result sounds terrible, and the crowd boos him. Overcome with fear and frustration, he throws the turntable and the mixer onto the dance floor, and is forcibly removed from the club.

An Angel at My Table is a dramatisation of the autobiographies of New Zealand author Janet Frame. Originally produced as a television mini-series, the film, as with Frame's autobiographies, is divided into three sections, with the lead role played by three actresses who portray Frame at different stages of her life: Karen Fergusson (child), Alexia Keogh (adolescent), and Kerry Fox (adult). The film follows Frame from when she grows up in a poor family, through her years in a mental institution, and into her writing years after her escape.

The story follows Prince Keoki Kanakoa, the Reverend Abner Hale and his wife Jerusha, who join the prince on mission to the Islands of Hawaii for the Calvinist church with the promise to make Kanakoa a minister. Upon their arrival to the islands, the ship stops in Lahaina, Maui before going on to Honolulu, Oahu where the main church has been established. There they are greeted by the aliʻi nui, Malama Kanakoa, Keoki's mother, who stops the Hales from traveling further when she demands Jerusha remain in Lahaina to teach her to write. As Hale learns, there is a serious difference between a destiny calling to him and the call to recognize the needs of others.
