And Quiet Flows the Don (Russian: Тихий Дон, translit. Tikhiy Don) is a three-part epic 1958 Soviet film directed by Sergei Gerasimov based on the novel of the same title by Mikhail Sholokhov. The first two parts of the film were released in October 1957 and the final third part in 1958. In 1958 the film won Crystal Globe award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and the Best Picture Award at the All-Union Film Festival.

Synopsis

La famille Melekhov, des Cosaques du Don, vit dans un village du sud de la Russie. Grigori Melekhov est un homme robuste, déchiré entre son premier amour, Aksiniya, et sa femme Natalia. Sa vie est comme un voyage pénible dans l'expérience de la Première Guerre mondiale, la Révolution russe de février 1917 et sa conséquence, la guerre civile (1917-1923). Les Cosaques, agriculteurs et guerriers traditionnels, souffrent à travers ces événements parmi les plus dramatiques de l'histoire de la Russie.

In late 17th-century Russia, Czar Peter the Great orders an attack on Turkey, which refuses to pay taxes to the Russian government. The Russian military is equipped with outdated technology, and they suffer their first defeat. After the defeat the czar orders the building of a fleet, and sends many educated men to study in Germany, France, and Holland. Russian victory over Turkey will not only force the Turks to pay taxes, but also make the Sea of Azov accessible to the Russians.

The film consists of two parts. In the first part entitled "Encounters" a successful journalist from Moscow Yuri Aliabiev (Y.Vasiliev) travels to a small city in the Urals because a certain Anikina, woman living in the city, writes complaints about local authorities accusing them of dissipation and bribe-taking. Arriving in the city Aliabiev meets Shura Okaemova, a nice-looking girl who works at a local plant. Attracted by Shura's intelligence and beauty Aliabiev attempts to seduce her but Shura rejects his attempts. Aliabiev leaves for Moscow and then on a business trip for Paris.
