The Living Truth (Živa istina), also called Real Truth, is a 1972 Croatian film directed and written by Tomislav Radić, starring Božidarka Frajt.

Radić's directorial debut, a very low-budget cinéma vérité-style film about the everyday life of a struggling actress was met with critical acclaim and is considered one of the best Croatian films of the 1970s. It started the career of Božidarka Frajt, whose performance won the Golden Arena for Best Actress at the 1972 Pula Film Festival.

Synopsis

Božidarka Frajt (playing herself) is a stage actress who is unsuccessfully looking for a job in Zagreb. The film follows her everyday life: she meets her friends and colleagues, goes to parties, remembers her difficult childhood as a war orphan, and contemplates her professional and personal failures.

Old houses in Zagreb are destroyed in order to build new, bigger blocks. A teacher who lives in one of these houses allows a stranger to share his home with him. The stranger has a fascination with statistics, and claims he can predict crimes based on statistical analyses. When a predicted murder did not occur, the stranger is adamant that the whole town will suffer unless a balance is achieved - and he leaves.

A mentally challenged girl is defended by a young man who takes care of pigs. He gets into a fight with the local saloon keeper, prompting the man to get the boy drunk and bribe a priest into marrying the boy to the unfortunate girl. A female teacher arrives in town to teach women how to paint. She uses the young boy as a model and then as a toy for her pleasure. The teacher subsequently takes another lover and abandons the young man, claiming that she was unaware of his marriage. The young boy eventually kills his wife, but his father takes the blame for the crime and confesses his sins before he dies in prison. As a conclusion to this sad movie, the townspeople punish the young boy for what he has done.
