Synopsis

Les problèmes amoureux et les aspirations professionnelles d'une bande de jeunes dans le Paris de l'après-guerre, entre la préparation d'une expédition africaine, les répétitions théâtrales et les soirées dans les cabarets de jazz.

Édouard and Caroline are preparing for a family evening during which Édouard will be expected to play the piano. Lacking a dinner jacket Édouard goes to borrow one from his wife's cousin. In the meantime Caroline attempts to re-model her dress to bring it more up-to-date. Her husband is not pleased and the evening consists of rows, fights and threats of divorce. It is the early morning before life returns to normal.

Le film commence un samedi soir alors qu'Antoine (Roger Pigaut), ouvrier dans une imprimerie et Antoinette (Claire Mafféi), employée au Prisunic des Champs-Élysées, s'apprêtent à quitter leur travail pour rejoindre leur domicile. Antoinette est séduisante et subit les assiduités d'un épicier peu scrupuleux (Noël Roquevert). Le couple, en proie aux difficultés de la vie matérielle, en cet après-guerre, se dispute pour des broutilles et se réconcilie sur l'oreiller. Antoine découvre que le billet de loterie acheté par Antoinette est gagnant, il pourra enfin réaliser son rêve et acheter un side-car. S'ensuivent quelques rebondissements, billet perdu et retrouvé, correction infligée à l'épicier, promenade en barque sur le lac du bois de Boulogne, match de football au Parc des Princes, et le couple, finalement installé sur son side-car, s'éloigne sur la route.

Marie (Simone Signoret), a woman of considerable beauty, is distressed at her treatment by Roland, a criminal who is a part of a local syndicate. When Roland's jealousy builds after a number of meetings between Marie and Georges, Roland decides to confront Georges behind a club where a number members of his syndicate watch. After Georges gains control of a knife that had been thrown between them to initiate the fight, George manages to stab Roland in the back after a brief scuffle, killing him almost instantly. When the police arrive at the scene everyone flees, including Marie, who seeks refuge away from the syndicate at a nearby village.

Four long-sentence prisoners are determined to escape. They start digging a tunnel. While they are still at it, the prison direction puts the new convict Gaspard into their cell.
