Rent-a-Cop is a 1988 action / comedy / crime film starring Burt Reynolds and Liza Minnelli. Reynolds plays a disgraced police officer, now working as a security guard, who falls in love with Minnelli, who plays a prostitute.
The film helped both lead actors to be nominated for the 1988 Golden Raspberry Awards for Worst Actor and Worst Actress. (These nominations were not solely on the merits of Rent-a-Cop, however; Reynolds and Minnelli were also cited for Switching Channels and Arthur 2: On the Rocks, respectively). Minnelli ended up "winning" the Worst Actress prize.
The film earned under US$300,000 in American ticket sales. IMDb lists the film as having debuted in 1987 because the movie came out in West Germany in November 1987, two months before its American premiere. Although set in Chicago, the movie was mostly filmed in Italy.
Synopsis
A drug bust is about to go down and Chicago cop Tony Church is on the case. Things go horribly wrong, though. His fellow officers get slaughtered and Church takes the blame, getting fired from the force.Actors

En pleine prohibition, Claire, une jeune veuve, tente de reprendre les affaires de son compagnon avec la complicité de Walker. Une opération de trafic de travailleurs clandestins à la frontière mexicaine échoue lamentablement. Un américain, Kibby propose au couple une association et le trio se lance dans la contrebande d'alcool. Ils utiliseront pour ce faire un bateau voguant dans la baie de San-Francisco, le Lucky Lady. L'affaire n'est pas si simple puisqu'il faut compter avec la mafia dirigée par l'inquiétant McTeague et aussi par des gardes côtes incorruptibles. La première opération réussit, le trio dépense son argent dans un hôtel de luxe. Les relations entre les trois personnages tournent vite au ménage à trois. Mais Claire pense à son avenir, et sait qu'une fois l'argent dépensé, ils n'auront plus rien, il leur faut donc refaire une nouvelle grosse opération, mais cette fois McTeague n'est pas décidé à se laisser faire et compte bien éliminer ce trio qui le gène dans son propre trafic. On va donc vers une confrontation majeure où tous les moyens vont être bons pour éliminer l'adversaire.

Quatre jeunes ouvriers lassés de leurs conditions décident de devenir gangsters. Jean-Pierre, le leader de la bande les prévient que ce métier ne s'improvise pas et qu'il faut donc l'apprendre. Ils créent donc ensemble la première école de gangstérisme où ils seront à la fois élèves et instructeurs. Martine, une jeune femme sourde et muette, peintre de trottoir se joindra au groupe. L'entrainement va comprendre une mise en condition physique (plus d'alcool ni te tabac) une endurance au souffle et aux coups, la pratique des sports de combats, le maniement des armes, l'apprentissage du poker, etc. Ils se font la main en commettant des "petits coups" puis montent en puissance avec des vols qui font la une des journaux. Ils essuient aussi quelques échecs, comme la tentative de kidnapping du chien d'une prostituée ou l'intimidation d'une bande rivale. Leur dernier coup, l'enlèvement contre rançon d'une vedette de cinéma tourne mal, l'un des membres de la bande paniquant en apercevant un policier sur le lieu de l'échange et mitraillant plusieurs personnes. Désorientés les quatre hommes se réfugient dans une ancienne carrière et se demandent comment gérer la suite des événements et finissent par s’entre-tuer, seule survivra Martine qui retournera dessiner sur les trottoirs.
