Ramdev Bakshi (Dev Anand) is a peaceful, quiet man who is only interested in wildlife and nature. He is sent then to the Indo-Chinese border in the army by his father, a war hero. Here he refuses to lift his gun and attack. He is then court-martialled. Later he is captured by the Chinese and humiliated, but when a beautiful Chinese agent promises him a better future by working and spying for her (against India), he agrees but foils their wicked plans by spying over them. Later the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 breaks out. He joins in the action to show what he is made of by killing Pakistani soldiers hiding in the bushes in an Indian village in the Khemkaran sector.

Classmates Laaj (Waheeda Rehman) and Shyam elope to Bombay with Laaj's necklace, which they hope to pawn to pay for their travels. On the train, a crafty journalist named Pran (Dev Anand) overhears the lovers' plan and follows them in search of a story. When Shyam snatches the necklace and runs off, it's Pran to the rescue. A newspaper editor, Shrivastav, is killed when he was about to expose the underworld links of a very rich and influential person. He calls over his friend, Inspector Shekhar, to talk to him about the threat he receives from the underworld. Srivastav dies by the time Shekhar arrives. He remembers that he saw a suspicious person by the elevator and borrows a lady's car to chase him. The lady (Shakila) throws a fit (and even throws the car keys in the mud when it is raining outside) and they lose the chase. In the morning the two return home when they find the keys. Meanwhile, on the crime scene, petty pickpocket Master (Johnny Walker) is found at scene and confesses seeing the whole murder. Shekhar uncovers some of the gang, and Master identifies the killer (Mehmood) who is put in jail.

Raghuvir (Dev Anand) is a poor bus conductor who is fired from the job after getting into an argument with a passenger. Dr. Anand Kumar attains his degree in medicine and re-locates to a small coal mining village to assist the local doctors there. Upon arrival, he is met by the ailing Dr. Prasad and his wife, and hired on a salary of Rs.250/- per month. He meets with the other doctors, namely Dr. Kothari, an alcoholic, and Dr. Bhutani, a dentist. Anand finds that he is saddled with all of Kothari's work as well his own because Kothari is drunk every night. He nevertheless carries on, aided by the local school-teacher, Nisha Patel, who he eventually marries. One day a proud father, Phoolchand, gives a baksheesh to Anand for the safe delivery of his first-born. This does not wager well with Mrs. Prasad, so she fires Anand. Meanwhile Anand's wife meets with an accident resulting in an abortion and Anand cannot do anything against the wealthy person whose car hits Nisha. This accident transforms Anand from a normal, good natured doctor into a doctor who is after money. Anand and Nisha re-locate to Bombay, where Anand later establishes himself as a leading doctor, is honored for his thesis, and becomes the personal doctor of a leading Bollywood actress, Maltimala. When Dr. Kothari and Dr. Bhutani go to visit them, they find that while Nisha is still the same good-natured woman, who is now expecting a child, Dr. Anand is a changed individual. The doctor does not keep relations with friends, lives a personal life, remains cold towards his wife, and is sadly unaware that she is even pregnant. Dr. Kothari starts a hospital in the village with the assistance of late Dr. Prasad's wife. Nisha leaves Dr. Anand to go back to the village. The death of Phoolchand's child at the hand of a dubious surgeon causes Dr. Anand to regret his new life. He goes back to the village. Nisha's pregnancy gets into complications. Ultimately, Nisha and her child are saved by Dr Kothari's surgery. In the end, Dr. Anand is back in the village with Nisha and his child.
