The film was also selected for the Sundance Film Festival and was short-listed, though not nominated, for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. It was also included in the Animation Show of Shows.
Synopsis
The film's story takes place aboard an out-of-control train. Barker intended the film to be a parable about life, and how the ruling class tries in vain to insulate itself from the fate suffered by the lower classes:Actors

The film portrays the increasingly desperate efforts of Mr. Johnson, an old man, to rid himself of a small, yet extremely destructive, yellow cat that will not leave his home. The attempts to get rid of the cat become more comical, and the cat becomes increasingly destructive, until Mr. Johnson resorts to an explosive solution. Mr. Johnson tries to put the cat in the woods, but gets lost, and returns. He traps the cat in a sack to have a fish, and tries to put in the sea on a boat, but nearly sinks when he is attacked by fish. Mr. Johnson tries to put the cat in a balloon, and send him flying away, but flies away, himself, and returns, hurt. Mr. Johnson tries to take the cat away on a pump trolley on a railroad track, going over many damsels in distress, but jumps over a cow, and hits a bug crossing the railroad track, when he falls into a mine, only to be attacked by snakes, bats, and mice. Mr. Johnson tries to blow up the cat, but fails with his hair on fire, and explodes into an angel, only to tease the poor little cat, who is squashed by his human body. The result is a twist ending playing on the end of the children's song, with the cat's nine lives bedeviling Mr. Johnson for eternity.

On Christmas Eve in the late-1950s, a boy witnesses a train called the Polar Express that is about to embark to the North Pole. When the boy examines the engine, the conductor lets him board the train. The boy meets other children, including a girl and a know-it-all kid. When the train picks up Billy, the hero boy applies the emergency brakes. Billy initially declines to board but changes his mind. The conductor summons a waiter team, who give the children hot chocolate, and the girl stows away one cup under her seat to give to Billy, who is alone in the observation car. The girl and conductor deliver the hot chocolate cup to Billy until the hero boy discovers the girl’s ticket is unpunched. He loses it before he can return it. After the ticket is abused by the wind and animals, it slips back in the train. The girl explains her lost ticket, and the conductor considers ejecting her before taking her for a walk on the top of the train instead. The hero boy locates the lost ticket and pursues them.

Flannery est le chef de gare de la petite ville de Westcote. Il tient à cœur son travail et fait tout selon les consignes de son manuel. Un jour McMorehouse, un vieil aventurier écossais, arrive avec une petite cage contenant des cochons d'Inde. Flannery demande à l'écossais de payer la taxe de 48 cents pour les cochons mais ce dernier refuse car ce sont des animaux de compagnie et ne souhaite payer que les 44 cents prévus pour ce type d'animaux. Flannery est si inflexible que McMorehouse décide d'abandonner ses cochons d'Inde. Le chef de gare, après avoir nommé les deux animaux Pat et Mike, informe sa direction par télégraphe. Mais avant que la réponse n'arrive, il s'avère que ce ne sont pas deux mâles mais un couple qui donne naissance à une portée de sept petits. L'expert contacté par la direction informe que les cochons d'Inde peuvent être mis dans la catégorie animaux de compagnie. Mais Flannery se retrouve déjà au milieu de centaines d'animaux. McMorehouse bien que introuvable ne peut pas payer la taxe qui se chiffre en milliers de dollars. Après que la direction a accepté de prendre en charge le transport des animaux, Flannery pense pouvoir se reposer mais un cirque arrive avec deux éléphants. Il tombe dans les pommes et à son réveil un couple de cochons d'Inde le regarde imperturbable.

Leaving for vacation, Mickey Mouse and Pluto arrive at a train station in Burbank, California (home of Walt Disney Productions headquarters). Carl Fredricksen is a young 8-year-old boy who idolizes famous explorer Charles Muntz. Muntz has been accused of fabricating the skeleton of a giant exotic bird he says he discovered at Paradise Falls, and vows to return there to catch one alive. One day Carl befriends a girl named Ellie, who is also a fan of Muntz. She confides to Carl her desire to move her "clubhouse"—an abandoned house in the neighborhood—to a cliff overlooking Paradise Falls. Carl and Ellie eventually get married and live together in the restored house. After suffering a miscarriage and being told they cannot have another child, the two decide to realize their dream of visiting Paradise Falls. They try to save for the trip, but repeatedly end up spending the money on more pressing needs. Finally, an elderly Carl arranges for the trip, but Ellie suddenly becomes ill and dies.
