Serangan Fajar (released internationally as Attack at Dawn) is a 1982 Indonesian war film directed by Arifin C. Noer and produced by G. Dwipayana. Telling the lives of several persons during the Indonesian National Revolution, the film used wayang imagery to show heroism. The critically acclaimed film has been read as emphasising then-President Suharto's role in the revolution, especially the General Attack of 1 March.

Synopsis

After the Japanese occupation, the Indonesian people begun fighting for independence, culminating with the 1 March 1949 general attack on the Dutch-held capital at Yogyakarta, led by Suharto. Amidst this backdrop two families face their own, personal issues. Temon has lost his father and lives with his grandmother. Meanwhile, the nobleman Romo is fighting for the nascent republic, while his wife is concerned about their daughter's relationship with a commoner.

In June 1944, Air Commodore Paul Collyer (Farrar) crash lands his plane on return from a reconnaissance mission. He appears to be suffering from amnesia and is unable to pass on the vital information he learned from the mission. The surgeon diagnoses no actual injury to the brain, but states that the memory loss is most likely attributable to shock, and in such cases memory is most often recovered through some mental jolt from the past. Moira Barrett (Campbell) is summoned to his bedside; he seems to recognise her, and his mind starts to go into flashback mode.

Il avait été conçu pour préparer les troupes américaines entrées en Allemagne après le débarquement à la mise en place de la dénazification. Le commentaire du film, volontiers schématique et virulent, était tout entier préoccupé par le danger que pouvaient courir les jeunes soldats au contact d’un pays dont toute l’histoire prouvait le bellicisme et l’immaturité politique : en chaque Allemand ordinaire sommeillait un ancien ou futur nazi, d’où la nécessité d’être constamment sur ses gardes et de ne pas entretenir avec la population des liens de trop grande proximité.
