Synopsis
L'histoire de Mei, une jeune femme chinoise qui quitte sa vie monotone au village pour découvrir la fièvre de la grande ville la plus proche, Chongqing. How Is Your Fish Today? tells the story of a famous screenwriter (Rao) whose film scripts have all been rejected by Chinese censors. He writes a script about a man named Lin Hao (Yang) for his producer, who expects it to be a Chinese version of The Fugitive. Upon reading Rao's arthouse script, the producer rejects it as the worst screenplay he has ever read. However, Rao does not abandon his story, instead he rewrites it. Rao begins to live through his main character, Lin Hao, as he writes about him fleeing his home on a journey of self-discovery. Hao makes his way to Mohe, as does Rao, and the writer enters his own narrative. Both characters, in a struggle for freedom, have left their homes behind, but while Lin Hao is running away, Hui Rao is searching for something.

Sixteen-year-old Lynda Mansell (Emily Lloyd) lives in a small English seaside town in the early 1950s. She is feisty and precocious and tries to shock other people with her vulgar and saucy tongue (her favourite insult is "Up yer bum"). Bored with conventional jobs (which she frequently loses) and her town's dull young men, Lynda has her first sexual experience with Dave (Jesse Birdsall) but after she has slept with one of her father's middle-aged friends (Tom Bell), her life changes. She becomes pregnant and her father, a somewhat rigid and conventional man, disowns her. Desperately she tries to seek an illegal abortion but in the end decides to become a mother.

The play begins with Trevor being tried in court on charges of throwing a brick through the window of a Pakistani man, Mr. Shahnawaz. He has also been charged with shoplifting from Harrods. Trevor is defiant when questioned by the judge. Trevor's social worker, Harry Parker (Eric Richard) has him sent to Hooper Street Residential Assessment Centre, where his punishment will be determined. The deputy superintendent in the assessment centre, Peter Clive (Bill Stewart), admits Trevor, and he is allocated a room with Errol (Terry Richards).

In order to improve their lifestyle, village near Badaun, based Ghulam Hasan (Farooq Shaikh) decides to re-locate to Bombay, on the insistence of his close friend Lalulal Tiwari (Jalal Agha).
