Lucy, Kit, and Mimi are three friends who live in a small Georgia town. While children, they bury a "wish box" in the ground, and vow to dig it up on the night of their high school graduation, also pledging to stay best friends forever; however, as they grow up, their friendship fades due to their different approaches of high school. Lucy becomes the valedictorian, Kit becomes the most popular girl in school, and Mimi faces teenage pregnancy. On the night of their graduation, they keep their promise and get together to open the "wish box". As they start talking again, they remember their old wishes while burying the box: Mimi wanted to travel to California, Lucy wanted to see her mother again, and Kit wanted to get married. Mimi brings up the topic of going to Los Angeles for a record contract audition. They all leave together: Lucy to visit her mom in Tucson, Arizona, and Kit to visit her fiance in Los Angeles.![Tart](/imagesen/small/117214.jpg)

The film opens at Burger-Matic, where Henry Lever (Chris Ellis) orders a milkshake at the drive-thru. At the window, he tells the attendant, Sally Jackson (Drew Barrymore), that his wife knows about their affair. She asks him if he has also told his wife about her pregnancy. On his way home, he encounters a ferocious wind. It turns out to be an attack helicopter, which runs him off the road. In a panic, he flees through the woods and drops his heart medication. At an outdoor chapel, he sits on a bench as the helicopter hovers in front of him. The pilot, Angus Montier (Jake Busey), shoots at the ground near him despite the protests of his copilot and brother, Dorian (Luke Wilson). The shots scare him enough to cause a fatal heart attack.![Palindromes](/imagesen/small/120336.jpg)

Brad Hamilton is a popular senior who is looking forward to his last year of school and almost has his 1960 Buick LeSabre paid off. He has a part-time job at a burger joint, "All American Burger" where his girlfriend, Lisa, also works. This esteemed establishment has a strict policy of etiquette: "No Shirt, No Shoes, No Dice". He is pondering how to end his relationship with Lisa so he can play the field during his senior year. However, Brad is fired for losing his temper at an obnoxious customer; when he tries to tell Lisa how much he needs her, she says she is dumping him to see other guys. Brad quits his next job at Captain Hook Fish & Chips because of the humiliation of having to wear a pirate costume when delivering food. He gets a job at a convenience store, Mi-T-Mart, where he successfully thwarts an attempted robbery and is promoted to store manager.![Riding in Cars with Boys](/imagesen/small/10226.jpg)

In 1961, eleven-year-old Beverly "Bev" Donfrio (Mika Boorem) is helping her father Leonard Donofrio (James Woods) get their family Christmas tree. When Leonard asks Bev what she wants this year for Christmas, believing that it's a bike, Bev shocks her father when she says that she wants a bra in order to get the attention of a boy she likes. Leonard tells his daughter that she is too young to be thinking about boys, and ends the conversation. Four years later, Bev (Drew Barrymore) is now a smart but naïve teenager. Her dream is to go to college in New York and become a writer. She and her two best friends Fay (Brittany Murphy) and Tina (Sara Gilbert) attend a party together one fateful evening where Fay finds her older boyfriend Bobby, who is about to be deployed to Vietnam, while Bev gives a love letter to a popular football player named Sky. Sky reads the contents of the letter aloud to his buddies, and they laugh at her. Bev flees to the bathroom, where she is consoled by a friendly stranger named Ray (Steve Zahn). Ray defends Bev's honor and gets into a fight with Sky. They are chased from the party and joined by Fay and Bobby during their quick exit. The four go to a lookout where Bobby and Fay have sex in the backseat. Bev is overcome by Ray's kindness and also has sex with him. Leonard, who is a police officer, drives up and brings them to the police station, where Bev claims that they only kissed.![Best Men](/imagesen/small/113205.jpg)
