Society Mugs is a Columbia Pictures short film starring Shemp Howard and Tom Kennedy.

Synopsis

High society woman Muriel Allen (Christine McIntyre) wants to attend a swanky dinner party thrown by friend Alice Preston (Rebel Randall) but husband Arthur (Charles Williams) decides instead to go on a fishing trip. Rather than showing up stag to the party, Muriel tells housekeeper Petunia (Etta McDaniel) to call the Acme Escort Service to bring a few "college boy" escorts. However, Petunia accidentally calls the Acme Exterminator Co., run by Shemp and Tom.

The Stooges are carpetlayers working at the home of Professor Sneed (Emil Sitka) and his daughter (Christine McIntyre). Sneed is developing a rocket fuel in secret for the government. Anemian spy Captain Rork (Philip Van Zandt) watches the professor through his front window, with hopes of kidnapping him. Of course, the Anemians capture the Stooges instead, mistaking Larry for the professor. Trouble brews when the Stooges are required to whip up some the fuel, and then write down the formula. It does not take long for the Anemians to capture the real Professor Sneed, along with his daughter, and throw them in jail until the formula is disclosed. Thanks to a shy prison guard (Jock Mahoney) who cannot help but flirt with Sneed's daughter, the group make a quick exit.

The Stooges are troubadours in medieval times. The villainous Black Prince has designs on marriage to Elaine, the princess. She however is in love with Cedric, the blacksmith. The Stooges try to intervene for Cedric by serenading Elaine; the music is the sextet from Donizetti's opera "Lucia di Lammermoor". The lyrics serve as a secret conversation between Elaine and the foursome that she will leave her shade up when the "coast is clear" however, the group is spotted by the black Prince who calls for the guards. the group escapes but after the king is informed he orders the princess to stay in his room for the night (where she'll be better guarded) and he'll sleep in the princess' room. The stooges unaware of the switch send Shemp to bring the princess however, he mistakes the king for her. After they fail to escape the king orders them imprisoned and to be executed the next morning. Elaine secretly sends them a "loaded" loaf of bread and the stooges use the tools to escape. This leads to a chase with the guards. While hiding, Moe overhears the Black Prince plotting with a co-conspirator to murder the king. The Stooges save the day by disguising themselves as knights and revealing the plot to Elaine, They distract the guards by to Stephen Foster’s "Old Folks at Home", thus allowing Elaine to free Cedric. Finally, the king realizes the plot and jails the Black Prince and his fellow plotter. Elaine is allowed to marry Cedric, and they all live happily ever after.

The Stooges are private eyes at the Alert Detective Agency who are called upon by the wealthy Mr. Goodrich (Emil Sitka). Goodrich reports that the Phantom Gang, of which his own niece (Christine McIntyre) is a member, has been murdering socialites, with Goodrich as their next target. By the time the Stooges arrive, Goodrich is out cold and locked away, with the butler (Charles Knight) (also a member of the Phantom Gang) greeting the trio. Goodrich's niece flirts with Shemp, ultimately trying to poison him. Finally, a towering goon named Nikko (Duke York) chases the Stooges from room to room. After Shemp knocks Nikko cold, he literally bumps into an unconscious Goodrich, who spills the Phantom Gang's plot. A fight then ensues with the lights out, and the Stooges ultimately get the baddies.

Shemp is suffering from an enlarged vein in his leg, and fears that it will lead to amputation. His doctor (Vernon Dent), however, advises that a few weeks in the old west will cure him. Upon arrival in a somewhat lawless town, the boys befriend the ruthless Doc Barker (Jack Norman). Barker listens to Shemp's story about his bad leg, mistaking "the biggest vein you ever saw" for a gold-bearing vein worth millions. The year is 1672, and the Stooges are garbage scow sailors stranded on Dead Man's Island.
