Some Came Running is a novel by James Jones, published in 1957. It is the story of a war veteran with literary aspirations who returns in 1948 to his hometown of Parkman, Indiana, after a failed writing career. (Parkman was loosely based on Jones's hometown of Robinson, Illinois.) A film version starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Shirley MacLaine was nominated for five Academy Awards.
Synopsis
Dave Hirsh is a cynical Army veteran who winds up in his hometown of Parkman after being put on a bus in Chicago while intoxicated. Ginny Moorehead, a woman of seemingly loose morals and poor education, has taken the same bus.Actors

In 1997, Sarah Huttinger (Jennifer Aniston), an obituary and wedding announcement writer for The New York Times, travels to Pasadena, California, for her sister Annie's (Mena Suvari) wedding, accompanied by her fiancé Jeff Daly (Mark Ruffalo). At a pre-wedding party, Sarah learns from her grandmother Katharine (Shirley MacLaine) that her mother Jocelyn ran off to Cabo San Lucas to spend time with her prep school classmate Beau Burroughs (Kevin Costner) the week before her wedding to Sarah's father Earl (Richard Jenkins). Jeff points out Sarah's parents were married just short of nine months before her birth, leading her to wonder if Beau might really be her biological father. Sarah also discovers her grandmother might have been the inspiration for Mrs. Robinson, an infamous character in the novel The Graduate.

Passau, mai 1957. La jeune artiste Franziska fait la connaissance de Stefan et tombe amoureuse. Après un an, Stefan se présente de nouveau. Elle fait semblant de ne pas l'aimer et d'être libre et indépendante, mais à la fin confesse son amour. Il lui fait une proposition de mariage et elle accepte malgré les inquiétudes. Comme il doit quitter le pays le lendemain pour un travail, elle retourne à Passau - dans la villa de Stefan, qu'elle veut réparer dans quelques semaines, alors qu'elle attend Stefan à Passau. Il obtiendrait trois semaines de congé de son patron pour le mariage prévu, mais à la fin de la journée, il s'engage à suivre les troubles dans le Gran Chaco avant de retourner à Passau. Franziska reçoit du Dr Leitner, qui lui avait une fois proposé la mariage, une lettre d'au revoir de Stefan ; il ne reviendra pas à Passau avant le printemps ou l'été. Franziska annonce à son père et au Dr Leitner être enceinte de Stefan. Stefan apprend finalement dans un bar en Amérique du Sud qu'il est devenu le père d'un fils. Il rompt son contrat et retourne vers Franziska.

In Berkeley, California in 1988, Mark O'Brien is a poet who is forced to live in an iron lung due to complications from polio. Due to his condition, he has never had sex. After unsuccessfully proposing to his caretaker Amanda, and sensing he may be near death, he decides he wants to lose his virginity. After consulting his priest, Father Brendan, he gets in touch with Cheryl Cohen-Greene, a professional sex surrogate. She tells him they will have no more than six sessions together. They begin their sessions, but soon it is clear that they are developing romantic feelings for each other. Cheryl's husband, who loves her deeply, fights to suppress his jealousy, at first withholding a love poem that Mark has sent by mail to Cheryl, which she eventually finds. After several attempts, Mark and Cheryl are able to have mutually satisfying sex, but decide to cut the sessions short on account of their burgeoning feelings.

Set in the year 1950, Pablo Neruda, the famous Chilean poet, is exiled to a small island in Italy for political reasons. His wife accompanies him. On the island, local Mario Ruoppolo is dissatisfied with being a fisherman like his father. Mario looks for other work and is hired as a temporary postman with Neruda as his only customer. He uses his bicycle to hand deliver Neruda's mail (the island has no cars). Though poorly educated, the postman eventually befriends Neruda and becomes further influenced by Neruda's political views and poetry.
