Set in early 20th century Tennessee, this film tells the story of schoolteacher Christy Huddleston who attempts to force a small community into progressing with the outside world. Considered an outsider by the residents of Cutter Gap, North Carolina native Christy is beloved as a teacher but has begun to stir up conflict with her pleas for progress and stories of an outside world of skyscrapers and modern conveniences. When an aviatrix crash lands in Cutter Gap, the attention is taken off Christy, until a series of robberies occur. Believing the thieves would never have come if it weren't for the new road Christy had built, the town unites against her. Set in the 1980s, the story focuses on Diana Moffitt, a likable 17-year-old from Portland, Oregon. Trouble starts when her parents decide to file for divorce, as well as being dumped by her boyfriend. She takes it very hard and begins a relationship with a 23-year-old man named A.J. Treace, even though her mother, Gayle, senses that A.J. is bad news. As it turns out, he is a pimp who abuses Diana and lures her into the world of prostitution, which results in her dropping out of school, quiting her job and estrangement from her family. Gayle is devastated by this news and even goes as far as confronting Diana in a strip club where she is working. Desperate to save her daughter, she often confronts her and starts looking for ways to do something about it. Diana sometimes shows interest in her old life, but has trouble breaking out of the dark world she is living in. At one point, Diana disassociates herself from A.J. after a violent confrontation and returns home with her mother, even agreeing to press charges against him, but later drops the charges after A.J. talks her out of it and promises to change.

When a beautiful high student named Cindy (Fill) is sexually harassed by Dr. Gordon Powell (Gross), the principal at her high school, she seeks out guidance counselor Sarah Collins (Kramer). When Nora McGill (Van Ark) is turned down for a loan officer position at the bank she works, by her boss Travis (McNulty), she starts to suffer from a mild depression. Her husband Harry (Macht) and teenage daughter Kim (Langton) start to estrange from Nora, as she becomes more bothered by chronic pains. The crew of the space shuttle Oklahoma comes back to Earth, one of its crew members having been struck in the arm by a tiny meteor, which evidently contains alien lifeforms. Connie connaît le bonheur avec son mari Tom et leurs deux filles, jusqu'à ce que d'affreux cauchemars viennent la hanter : nuit après nuit, elle se voit victime de viol.
