Synopsis
After her father's death, Su Ling (Ivy Ling Po) struggles to support her ill mother and disabled brother, but Mr. Su's former student Chiang Sung-ping (Chiao Chuang), a virtuoso drummer, does everything to help them. With Chiang's help, Su Ling becomes a skilled singer and performs in nightclub with him. They fall in love, but one day Su learns that Chiang is dependent on a drug to help him focus. Chiang promises that he would quit, but soon Su finds out otherwise and breaks up with him. Later, after listening to Chiang's explanation, Su realizes how they love each other and is determined to help him recover from the drug addiction. They get married and go to a resort for their honeymoon. Everything is blissful, but the possibility of her husband smoking the substance again is always in the back of Su's mind.Actors

The film is set in Singapore's Chinatown. It is narrated by Jen Fan, owner of a successful restaurant. Her signature dish is "Chicken Rice"-in fact she is rather well known for it. Jen has three sons. Daniel and Harry are gay, and Jen is determined the youngest, Leo, does not go the same way. She enlists the help of her friend Kim-Chui, who owns a nearby restaurant. A young 16-year-old girl, Zhu Ying Tai, managed to convince her parents to send her to college at Hangzhou on the condition that she went in the guise of a man. Su Fen, a young and frail girl, looked forward to her wedding with her fiancé, Li Kuo-liang. The happy couple's bliss was cut short when war broke out. Kuo-liang was summoned to fight at the front lines. In his absence, Su Fen discovered she had tuberculosis. This did not please her mother-in-law who was looking for a healthy daughter-in-law to bear sons to continue the family name. She forced Su Fen to divorce her son and leave. When Kuo-liang returned on leave, he was angry and in despair for he still loved Su Fen very much. He went to look for her and was prevented from seeing her by her furious father. The Qin family is wealthy and Master Qin has three children: Qin Feng Xiao (Ivy Ling Po) and Feng Sheng (Chin Feng) from his late wife, and a third son from his current wife.
