Synopsis
Robert Scott is a former Force Recon Master Gunnery Sergeant, acting as a selection cadre member for Delta Force. While observing an exercise designed to evaluate Delta candidates, Scott meets a recruit, Curtis, as well as Sergeant Jacqueline Black, a knife-fighting instructor.Actors

Bobby Gold (Mantegna) is an inner-city homicide detective on the trail of Robert Randolph (Rhames), a drug-dealer and cop-killer on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List. En route to nab an accomplice of Randolph, Gold and his partner Tim Sullivan (Macy) happen upon a murder scene: the elderly Jewish owner of a candy store in a black ghetto has been gunned down, reportedly for a fortune hidden in her basement. The deceased woman's son, a doctor, uses his clout to have Gold assigned to the case in the belief that Gold, himself Jewish, might be empathetic to his plight. Gold, however, seems to disregard his ethnicity, and beyond that, he's irritated about being pulled off a much higher-profile case. Ultimately, though, this is offset by interactions with members of the Jewish community that play on Gold's feelings of inadequacy and incapability of fitting in.

In 1983, Hector Negron, an aged Puerto Rican World War II veteran, works as a post office clerk in New York City. The film begins in "Northern Coalfields, South Africa, 1980". It revolves around Patrick Chamusso, a young, apolitical man (played by Derek Luke) who is accused of carrying out an attack against the government, and an Afrikaner police officer, Nic Vos, played by Tim Robbins. Macy stars as the COB (chief of the boat) on a fictitious US Navy submarine, the USS Swordfish (although there were two actual submarines named USS Swordfish that served the US Navy during and after World War II, neither are represented by the sub in this film). While on patrol in the North Atlantic, the ship is ambushed by two German U-boats. Swordfish destroys one of them, but is critically damaged by a torpedo fired from the second one, the fictitious U-boat U-429 (again, there was a real WWII German submarine U-429, not actually represented in the film). Eight members of the American crew escape and are held prisoner on board U-429. However, the American executive officer had previously contracted meningitis and given it to his captain, who brought it aboard the U-429. Within days, over half the German crew, as well as some of the Americans, contract the disease and die. Although the Germans and Americans begin to work together to keep the boat operational, not all the U-boat crew is willing to go along with this arrangement. Also, another U-boat and an American destroyer (the fictional USS Logan, not related to the actual attack transport of that name) threaten to overwhelm their tentative truce.

On Fat Tuesday in New Orleans, the ferry Sen. Alvin T. Stumpf is carrying hundreds of U.S. Navy sailors and their families across the Mississippi River from their base to the city. Suddenly, the ferry explodes and sinks, killing 543 passengers and crew. Special Agent Doug Carlin (Denzel Washington) from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATF) is sent to investigate and discovers evidence of a bomb planted by a domestic terrorist. Arriving at the scene he hears his unique ring tone coming from a nearby body bag. He then meets with local investigators and FBI Special Agent Paul Pryzwarra (Val Kilmer), and informs them of his findings. He later learns about a charred body pulled from the river, identified as Claire Kuchever (Paula Patton). Unlike the other bodies from the ferry, though, this one appears to have been killed before the explosion.
