Un château dans une île de Suède. Une curieuse famille : Hugo, un hobereau autocrate ; Eléonore, sa femme ; Agathe, sa sœur, vieille fille attachée aux traditions ; Sébastien, frère d'Eléonore, à qui le lie une affection trouble ; une grand-mère tombée en enfance. Hugo, qui a découvert (ou provoqué) la liaison, veut tuer Eric. Agathe et Sébastien partagent son point de vue. Finalement, Eric s'enfuit sur le lac à moitié gelé et tombe d'épuisement aux pieds d'un paysan.
