In Monte Athena, in the Kingdom of Italy, young lovers Lysander (Dominic West) and Hermia (Anna Friel) are forbidden to marry by her father Egeus (Bernard Hill), who has promised Hermia to Demetrius (Christian Bale). Lysander and Hermia makes plans to flee to the forest to escape the arrangement. Demetrius follows them, having been made aware of the plan by Helena (Calista Flockhart), a young woman who is desperately in love with him. Once in the forest, they wander into the fairy world, ruled by Oberon (Rupert Everett) and Titania (Michelle Pfeiffer), King and Queen of the fairies. Oberon and his servant sprite Puck (Stanley Tucci) cause mayhem among the lovers with a magic potion that causes both Lysander and Demetrius to fall in love with Helena, leading to a rift between all four that culminates (famously in this adaptation) in a mud-wrestling scene. Oberon then bewitches Titania with the same potion.

Dana Marschz is a recovering alcoholic and failed actor who has become a high school drama teacher in Tucson, Arizona, "where dreams go to die". 1977. Cette dernière, surnommée « la potiche » par sa propre fille, supporte sans broncher le mauvais caractère, les vexations et les infidélités de son mari, notamment la relation qu’il entretient avec sa secrétaire, Nadège (Karin Viard). Pujol est excédé par le climat social exécrable qui règne dans son usine. Le député-maire communiste de la ville, Maurice Babin (Gérard Depardieu) ne se prive pas de souffler sur les braises. Un jour les ouvriers déclenchent une grève sans préavis qui débouche sur la séquestration de Pujol. Il fait une grave attaque cardiaque. Dans l'attente de son rétablissement, sa « potiche » de femme décide, à la surprise générale, de prendre la direction de l'entreprise. Et, à la surprise générale, elle s'en tire plutôt bien.

Voulant assurer le triomphe de la médecine qu'il fait passer avant l'intérêt des malades, et souhaitant devenir le maître des habitants du village et de ses environs, le docteur Knock arrive à Saint-Maurice pour succéder au docteur Parpalaid, brave honnête homme mais dont la clientèle est rare. L'état de santé du pays est excellent. Se rendant compte qu'il a été dupé par son prédécesseur, mais loin de se décourager, Knock fait comprendre à chaque patient qui se presse à ses consultations que tout bien portant est un malade qui s'ignore. Le résultat ne se fait pas attendre. Tout le village se retrouve au lit ; l'hôtel est transformé en clinique et même Parpalaid revenu temporairement, doit s'aliter, inquiet à son tour pour sa santé, à la suite du « diagnostic » du docteur Knock, ce dernier ayant réussi à le persuader qu'il était en mauvaise santé.
