The film is set in a small rural village in Japan in the 19th century. According to tradition, once a person reaches the age of 70 he or she must travel to a remote mountain to die of starvation, a practice known as ubasute. The story concerns Orin, who is 69 and of sound health, but notes that a neighbor had to drag his father to the mountain, so she resolves to avoid clinging to life beyond her term. She spends a year arranging all the affairs of her family and village: she severely punishes a family who are hoarding food, and helps her younger son lose his virginity.![Buffalo '66](/imagesen/small/9578.jpg)

In West Dallas, Texas, 22-year-old drug dealer Chris Smith (Hirsch), desperate to pay his debt to loan sharks, decides to murder his mother, Adele, to collect the $50,000 of insurance money. He has been told by his mother's boyfriend Rex that the sole beneficiary will be Chris' younger sister Dottie (Temple). Assuming Dottie would share any money she gets with them, Chris manages to rope his dim-witted father Ansel (Haden Church) into a conspiracy to kill Adele – who is Ansel's ex-wife – to get the money. Chris also enlists the help of Joe Cooper (McConaughey), a police detective who has a side career as a contract killer. Ansel plans to split the money four ways between themselves, Dottie, and Ansel's new wife Sharla (Gershon). Dottie hears the plan as they are talking, and agrees that it's a good idea.![Visitor Q](/imagesen/small/10390.jpg)

The film's plot is often compared to Pier Paolo Pasolini's Teorema, in which a strange visitor to a wealthy family seduces the maid, the son, the mother, the daughter, and finally the father, before leaving a few days after, subsequently changing their lives.![Kaboom](/imagesen/small/13572.jpg)

Junon Vuillard is Abel Vuillard's wife, and the iron-willed matriarch of the Vuillard family. Junon held her family together through many tough times, and although her willpower helped the family survive and prosper, it also has left many bad feelings among her children. Junon is still a handsome woman, and though her husband (who owns a small fabric dying plant) has become obese and clearly aged, he retains a remarkable clarity, acceptance, tolerance, and unconditional love for his family, and it is clear that he and their love for each other is the lynchpin that holds an otherwise fragmented family together, albeit uneasily.![We Bought a Zoo](/imagesen/small/14177.jpg)

The film is set in the fictional County Durham mining town of Everington Village during the 1984-85 UK miners' strike, and centres on the character of 11-year-old Billy Elliot, his love of dance, and his hopes of becoming a professional ballet dancer. Billy lives with his widowed father, Jackie, and older brother, Tony, both coal miners out on strike (the latter being the union leader), and also his maternal grandmother, who probably has Alzheimer's disease and once aspired to be a professional dancer. Billy's mother, Jenny, died on 2 December 1983, aged 38.
