Paris Qui Dort (literally "Paris which sleeps") is a 1925 French science fiction comedy silent short film directed by René Clair. Also released as Le rayon de la mort, its international English-language titles were The Crazy Ray and Paris Asleep. It has also been released in the USA as At 3:25.

Synopsis

The film is about a mad doctor who uses a magic ray on citizens which causes them to freeze in strange and often embarrassing positions. People who are unaffected by the ray begin to loot Paris.

Julien Boissel, jeune industriel à succès, est fiancé à Yvonne Vincent, la fille d’un ancien ministre. Ce dernier, en proie au chantage du patron de presse Gauthier qui veut épouser la jeune fille, ordonne aux jeunes gens de rompre. Après une soirée au Moulin Rouge pour oublier, Boissel rejoint un docteur qui parvient à dissocier son âme de son corps. Rendu invisible, le fantôme commet de multiples facéties, y compris en plein conseil des ministres, puis finit par subtiliser le dossier compromettant dans le bureau de Gauthier. Il lui faudra ensuite rejoindre au plus vite son corps sans vie avant que celui-ci ne soit disséqué à l’institut médico-légal, avant de retrouver sa promise.

In a working-class district of Paris, Albert, an impecunious street singer, lives in an attic room. He meets a beautiful Romanian girl, Pola, and falls in love with her; but he is not the only one, since his best friend Louis and the gangster Fred are also under her spell. One evening Pola dares not return home because Fred has stolen her key and she does not feel safe. She spends the night with Albert who, reluctantly remaining the gentleman, sleeps on the floor and leaves his bed to Pola. They soon decide to get married, but fate prevents them when Émile, a thief, deposits with Albert a bag full of stolen goods. It is discovered by the police, and Albert is sent to prison. Pola finds consolation with Louis. Later Émile is caught in his turn and admits that Albert was not his accomplice, which earns Albert his freedom. Fred has just got back together with Pola who has fallen out with Louis, and in a jealous fury at Albert's return Fred decides to provoke a knife fight with him. Louis rushes to Albert's rescue and the two comrades are re-united, but their friendship is clouded by the realisation that each of them is in love with Pola. Finally Albert decides to give up Pola to Louis.

In the 1890s, Lawrence Stevens (Dick Powell) is an obituary writer unhappy in his job who is given, by a ghostly deceased newspaper man named Pop Benson (John Philliber), a newspaper that has tomorrow's news. He uses the paper to write stories and get the scoop on other reporters, but this also brings him under the suspicion of Police Inspector Mulrooney (Edgar Kennedy), who wants to know how Stevens always seems to know what's going to happen and where, mainly a robbery at a theater's box office during a performance. Stevens and his new girlfriend Sylvia (Linda Darnell) – half of a clairvoyant act with her uncle Oscar Smith (Jack Oakie) – have a number of adventures, until her uncle mistakenly thinks that Stevens has consorted with his niece in her boarding house room. The uncle attempts to intimidate Stevens into marrying her, not knowing that Stevens has come to him to ask for her hand.

The setting is Paris in the early 1900s ("1906, perhaps") and much of the action takes place in a silent film studio.
