Synopsis
Licencié à la suite d'un plan social, Alain Brissot, cadre dans une grande société, décide de faire acte de résistance en continuant à occuper son bureau envers et contre tous… Il entame rapidement une grève de la faim, et, après maintes péripéties, finit par récupérer le poste de son ancien directeur, lui-même « débarqué » à la suite de l'échec d'un contrat juteux avec un pays africain.Actors

A stylish, attractive young woman, Célestine (Jeanne Moreau), arrives from Paris to become chambermaid for an odd family at their country chateau. Flash-back sur le parvis de l’église : Catherine (Brigitte Bardot) raconte ce qui s’est passé auparavant, avant que Judith (Micheline Presle) ne se jette dans les bras de Michel (Louis Jourdan), en lui disant qu’elle est divorcée et que Catherine ne s’évanouisse. Catherine, jeune provinciale, est repérée par Michel, amant de Judith, directrice d’un journal de mode. Elle devient mannequin sous le nom de « Chouchou » et elle forme un couple pour le magazine avec Patrice (Jean-François Calvé), un ex-acteur. Judith décide de marier Catherine et Patrice, faussement, pour faire un coup médiatique. Catherine et les autres vont faire des photographies et filmer le mariage dans le village natal de Catherine. Tout le monde est hébergé chez les tantes de Catherine, qui l’ont élevée. Catherine repousse la demande en mariage de Patrice, qui part dans la nuit. Michel est contraint de prendre la place de Patrice pour faire les photos, réalisées par Toni (Marcel Amont) et Marc (Roger Dumas, en blond !). Catherine s’aperçoit qu’elle aime Michel et elle finit par le lui avouer. Il ne veut pas la croire. Elle va s’offrir à Toni et à Marc, mais il y a des contretemps à chaque fois. Judith a récupéré Patrice et vient annoncer son divorce à Michel, après la fausse cérémonie à l’église (retour au début du film). Michel finit par repousser Judith. Il se marie vraiment avec Catherine. Judith veut qui’ils soient accompagnés par Marc et Toni pendant leur voyage de noces. Michel refuse et part avec Catherine.

François Pignon, an unassuming divorced man with a teenage son who ignores him, lives a quiet and unremarkable life. Christine Papin (Sylvie Testud), and Léa Papin (Julie-Marie Parmentier) are sisters with a troubled past, who work as maids in Le Mans, France. As an old man nearing the end of his life, Adso, youngest son of the Baron of Melk recounts how, as a young novice in 1327, he accompanied his mentor, the Franciscan friar William of Baskerville to a Benedictine abbey in Northern Italy. The abbey had been chosen as the site for a theological debate between the Franciscan order and the Pope on the poverty of Christ. The abbey is already home to a famed scriptorium where scribes copy, translate or illuminate books. The mysterious recent death of the monk Adelmo of Otranto - a young but famous illuminator - has stirred fears among the abbey's devout inhabitants. The Abbot seeks help from William, known for his deductive powers. The illuminator's death cannot be dismissed as a suicide because the body was found at the foot of a tower having only a window which cannot be opened. William is reluctant to involve himself, though he is persuaded not only because of the intellectual challenge, but also because of his desire to disprove fears of a demonic culprit in Adelmo's death. William is also motivated to act by his fears that the Abbot will summon officials of the inquisition if the mystery remains unsolved.
