Add to a movie listThe Famous Box Trick (French: Illusions Fantasmagoriques; Star Film Catalogue no. 155.) is a 1898 French short black-and-white silent trick film, directed by Georges Méliès, featuring a stage magician who transforms one boy into two with the aid of an axe. The film, "harks back to stage magic," and, according to Michael Brooke of BFI Screenonline, "can be viewed as a kind of sequel to The Vanishing Lady (Escamotage d’une dame chez Robert-Houdin, 1896) in that it reprises many of the same elements."

Synopsis
A stage magician conjures up a dove which he then places in a box with a set of clothes. A boy appears from the box, who the magician divides into two with an axe. The two boys squabble and the magician transforms one into a paper tissue which he shreds and places the other back in the box. The magician then destroys the box with a hammer to show the boy has vanished. The boy reappears and is transformed into flags. The magician then disappears in a puff of smoke only to re-enter through a door to take his bow.Actors

A traveler, complete with riding boots and a pith helmet, arrives in a small hotel room. When he puts his luggage on the bed, it disappears immediately. Further magical confusions follow: when he sets down his helmet, it jumps to the floor and moves of its own accord before disappearing in its turn; when the traveler tries to light a candle, it jumps across the room and explodes; when he takes off his coat, it flies through the wall; when he tries to sit down, his chair changes place. Finally managing to sit down, the traveler takes off his boots, which walk away; when the traveler moves to the night table, it too disappears. The traveler prepares for bed and takes off his trousers, which fly through the ceiling. When he jumps into bed, it too disappears and reappears. The perplexed and irritated traveler gives up and dashes out of the room.

Deux femmes en sous-vêtements saluent en direction de la caméra, subitement les voilà habillées. Elles se recouvrent d'un voile et réapparaissent en hommes qui commencent à se battre. L'un démembre l'autre, le remembre, fait apparaître une première femme, puis une autre, tous disparaissent. Un gros homme apparaît, un quidam essaie de le soulever, en vain. Le gros homme écrase l’autre, puis le plie. Dans son dos, le quidam reprend forme et expédie son adversaire en l'air, criant victoire. Puis il écrase le gros homme, qui explose comme un pet-de-loup, les membres disloqués, avant de reprendre sa forme initiale.

Dans son atelier, un inventeur exulte d'avoir créé un dirigeable. Soudain, des créatures apparaissent (deux nymphes et deux singes) et saccagent les lieux. Dans la deuxième scène, la demeure de l'inventeur est détruit, et il voit au loin son dirigeable voler, alors que des sirènes passent non loin. Puis, une boule de feu se dirige vers l'engin et le fait exploser. L'inventeur semble alors se réveiller et se retrouve dans son atelier du début, normal. Mais pris de colère, il envoie valser le plan du dirigeable.

Un Pierrot joue d'un instrument devant une bâtisse, dont sort un gentilhomme énervé par ces bruits et le menace. Pierrot se met ensuite à dépérir. Soudaine, la Lune se met à grossir, sur le croissant duquel est allongée une femme. Pierrot lui fait la cour, puis joue à nouveau de son instrument. L'homme énervé revient alors, mais cette fois-ci avec ses sbires qui tentent de l'attraper. La dame sur la Lune fait aussitôt disparaître ses acolytes et grimper Pierrot sur le croissant, puis change l'apparence du gentilhomme en personnage crasseux. Le couple disparaît, un œil remplace la Lune puis plus rien. Pendant ce temps, le gentilhomme n'est pas reconnu par ses valets, qui le rouent de coup. La Lune revient, sous la forme d'un visage et se met à rire de moquerie.

In a laboratory, an alchemist is working with a large retort on a stove. After consulting a book, he falls asleep in a chair near the retort. As he sleeps, a giant snake comes out of the stove and transforms into a jester, who wakes the alchemist and forces him to look in a hand-mirror. When the alchemist does so, the retort grows much larger, the alchemist falls back to sleep, and a giant spider with a human face appears inside the retort. The spider dissolves into a young woman sprinkling coins onto the ground. Sparks escape from the retort and transform into a ghost. The alchemist wakes in terror, and the giant retort explodes. Two assistants run to the alchemist, who has fallen prostrate on the ground. The jester reappears and stands triumphant over the fallen alchemist.
