Synopsis
Hamilton Hill rencontre Estelle Redding dans un atelier de réparation de parapluies. Peu après, il la sauve d'une attaque par deux voyous. En fait, Estelle a caché dans le manche de son parasol la formule d'un produit qui pourrait remplacer le charbon. Edward Burnham, un des voyous, dit à Hamilton qu'Estelle est un espionne allemande, mais le jeune homme ne croit pas à cette histoire. Estelle confie le parasol à Hamilton, mais quand Burnham, qui s'avère être le frère d'Estelle, arrive à le récupérer, ils découvrent tous deux que la formule n'y est plus. Deux agents allemands, qui se font passer pour des agents du gouvernement, réussissent presque à obtenir la formule, mais Hamilton, accompagné de Burnham, qui a changé de camp, arrivent à temps pour la sauver. Finalement la formule est transmise au gouvernement américain, et Hamilton et Estelle peuvent penser à des choses plus romantiques.Actors

In an opening scene before the credits an assassin, Banat, is seen preparing a gun while a gramophone skips as it plays. The story that follows is the narrative of a letter from Howard Graham, an American armaments engineer, to his wife Stephanie. While journeying to the Soviet port of Batumi to return to the United States to complete his business with the Turkish Navy, Graham and his wife stop in Istanbul and are met by Kopeikin, a Turkish employee of Graham's company, who under the pretense of discussing business, takes Graham to a nightclub to introduce him to dancer Josette Maretl and her partner Gogo. When Banat tries to kill Graham during a magic act, he shoots the magician instead, and Graham is brought to the headquarters of the Turkish secret police for questioning. Colonel Haki of the secret police warns Graham that German agents are trying to kill him to delay the re-arming of Turkish ships. He shows Graham a photograph of Banat, whom he says was hired by a Nazi agent named Muller, and orders Graham to travel secretly to Batumi aboard a tramp steamer instead of by train. Haki assures him that he will personally see that Stephanie gets to their hotel in Batumi ahead of him.

In wartime England during the Blitz, Stephen Neale (Ray Milland) is released from Lembridge Asylum. While waiting for a train to London, Neale visits a village fête hosted by the Mothers of Free Nations charity. He guesses the weight of a cake for a shilling, and is urged to go to the palm reader's tent to have his fortune told by Mrs. Bellane (Aminta Dyne), an older woman. He asks her to ignore the past and tell the future, which startles her. She cryptically tells him to take another guess at the weight of the cake at 4 pounds 15½ ounces. Neale does so and wins the prize. Then a young blond man hurries to see Mrs. Bellane. People try to persuade Neale to give the cake to the blond man, but he refuses.

Mais au dernier moment, La Chatte retrouve sa lucidité.
