Trois ingénieurs - l'Allemand Hagen, le Britannique Corner et le Français Duval - travaillent pour la compagnie vénézuélienne Ortiguez. Lorsque la Première Guerre mondiale est déclarée, ils doivent se séparer pour aller rejoindre les armées de leurs pays. Brack, un contremaître compatriote de Hagen, veut retourner en Allemagne avec lui. Avant le départ, ils se rendent dans un bar. Une bagarre éclate lorsque l'Allemagne est accusée d'être à l'origine des hostilités. Alors qu'il défend Brack, Hagen est poignardé. Grièvement blessé, l'ingénieur allemand vient voir sa patronne, Manuela Ortiguez. Elle accorde son aide aux Allemands ; une histoire d'amour commence entre Hagen et Manuela. Malgré les suppliques de la Vénézuélienne, Hagen répond à l'appel de son pays.

La veuve Olga Petrovna entreprend un long voyage alors que l'Empire russe s'écroule. En pleine révolution d’Octobre, il lui est impossible de rejoindre sa fille Maria. Elle n'a pas pu avoir de ses nouvelles par sa nourrice. Elle rencontre par hasard Alexander Repin, une connaissance de son vieil ami et soupirant Sergei Smirnov. Repin accepte de l'aider, d'autant qu'il est tombé amoureux d'Olga. Tous deux tentent de s'échapper avec l'aide d'un prêtre. Mais Alexandre est arrêté tandis qu'Olga reste libre, car un pope l'a fait passer pour sa nièce. Alexander et Sergei se retrouvent dans la prison. Mais ce dernier se révèle vite être un traître. Honteux, Sergei aide finalement son ami à s'évader en prétendant l'avoir exécuté et jeté son corps dans le fleuve. Un peu plus tard Smirnov est libéré et part avec Olga, dont il est amoureux depuis longtemps, vers Shanghai.

Une femme du monde, Brigitte Sparrenberg, mariée à un banquier, a été autrefois la maîtresse du baron Gaffris, homme peu scrupuleux. Le hasard la remet en présence de Gaffris, qui tente à nouveau de la séduire. Brigitte l'éconduit vivement, mais Gaffris, furieux, la menace de chantage. Ina, la fille de Brigitte, a découvert l'affaire et décide d'aller parler au baron pour défendre sa mère. Peu après, Gaffris est retrouvé mort. Brigitte déclare avoir poignardé Gaffris. Au tribunal, Ina finit par révéler la vérité : en repoussant les avances du baron, elle l'a involontairement blessé avec un poignard dont la lame était empoisonnée. La fille et la mère, innocentées, retrouvent le banquier Sparrenberg, père et mari bienveillant.

Richard and Karl are German prisoners of war in Siberia. Since escape is almost impossible, they are unguarded and live an almost idyllic existence running a ferry. Richard misses his wife Anna greatly; he literally counts the days since he's seen her and tells Karl about her and their home in detail. When he decides to escape, Karl comes with him. While crossing a desert Richard collapses. He asks Karl to go on without him, but Karl refuses to leave his friend and carries him. But when Karl leaves to get water, Richard is recaptured and sent to work in a lead mine.

In a noisy print shop, a disgraced police detective named Hofmeister (Karl Meixner) escapes from pursuing criminals' attacks. Hofmeister telephones his former superior Inspector Karl Lohmann (Otto Wernicke) and explains frantically that he has discovered a huge criminal conspiracy. Before he can disclose the identity of responsible criminal, the lights go out, shots are fired, and Hofmeister becomes mad. Hofmeister vanishes only to be found later singing every time he feels watched, and he is institutionalized at Professor Baum's asylum.
