Muggs McGinnis (Leo Gorcey) practices for his boxing match the next night. In order to raise money, Muggs and the gang go to Nick (Charles Judels)'s pool hall and challenge hall regular Harry Wycoff (Gabriel Dell) to a game of pool. Muggs has pre-arranged with gang member Danny to use special trick chalk for the pool cue so that Wycoff will lose, but Danny (Bobby Jordan) is so convinced of Muggs's talent that he does not use the chalk, and Muggs loses the match. When Wycoff insists that Muggs pay off his wager, Muggs hits him in the stomach and leaves without paying.

The boys are trying to raise money for their friend Gloria. She has to give up her aspiring singing career in order to stay home and take care of her sick mother. Slip comes up with the idea to hypnotize Sach into thinking he is an unbeatable fighter so that they can enter him into a contest to win $2,500. Meanwhile, Gabe brokers a deal with a crooked nightclub owner to give Gloria the big break she has been waiting for. In a typical English working-class town, the juveniles have nothing more to do than hang around in gangs. One day, Alan Darcy (Bob Hoskins), a highly motivated man with the same kind of youth experience, starts trying to get the young people off the street and into doing something they can believe in; boxing. Soon, he opens a training facility which is accepted gratefully by them and the gangs start to grow together into friends. Darcy manages to organise a public fight for them to prove what they have learned. A training camp with hiking tours into the mountains of Wales forge the group into a tightly-knit club society. With the day of the fight drawing closer, the young boxers get more and more excited.
