Add to a movie listThe Land of College Prophets is a 2005 independent comedy film produced by the Hale Manor Collective, a trio of Connecticut filmmakers consisting of Mike Aransky, Phil Guerrette and Thomas Edward Seymour. The film mixes comedy with science-fiction in a tale of two brawling college students (Guerrette and Seymour) who accidentally reactivate a dormant well that spews toxic liquids into the surrounding community, resulting in abrupt and deadly changes within nature and people.
The Land of College Prophets was shot in digital video on locations across Connecticut in 2003. The film premiered in New York in 2005,and later won five awards at the 2005 B-Movie Film Festival, including Best Picture. It also won the Best Picture Award at the 2005 New Haven Underground Film Festival and the Best Ensemble Award from Bare Bones International Film Festival. Reviews were generally positive, with Rick Curnutte of The Film Journal proclaiming that it “could easily become the first genuine cult hit of the DV era.”
The film was released on DVD in 2005 by York Entertainment.

London Betty (Nicole Lewis) is the plucky British journalist who gets a newspaper job in the small American town of Pharisee. Truck driver Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) and his friend, restaurant owner Wang Chi (Dennis Dun), go to the airport to pick up Wang's fiancée Miao Yin (Suzee Pai), who is arriving from China. A Chinese street gang, the Lords of Death, tries to kidnap another Chinese girl at the airport who is being met by her friend Gracie Law (Kim Cattrall), intending to sell her as a sex slave. After Jack intervenes, they take Miao Yin instead. In Jack's big-rig truck, he and Wang track the Lords of Death to the back alleys of Chinatown, where they find a funeral procession that quickly erupts into a street fight between the Chang Sing and Wing Kong, two ancient Chinese societies. When "The Three Storms" (Thunder, Rain, and Lightning) appear, slaughtering the Chang Sing, Jack tries to escape but runs over Lo Pan (James Hong), a powerful and legendary sorcerer, as well as the leader of the Wing Kong. Horrified, Jack exits his truck, only to find Lo Pan, who is merely annoyed. Wang hurriedly guides Jack through the alleys, escaping the carnage and mayhem, but Jack's truck is stolen.

Lester Dwervick (Tim Young) has always been sort of different. The sickly teen is too shy to make friends, and lives in a trailer park. Because of these reasons, his classmates and teacher view him as a "white trash outcast". To make matters worse, Lester's mother is an alcoholic tramp who often brings home drunken men from the local bars. Lester has nobody to confide in, and often draws and sculpts birds and other animals to keep him hopeful of the future. One day, he is being savagely tormented by a local bully when Sheriff Patterson's (Richard Elfman) daughter Judie (Tiffany Shepis) sticks up for him. Thinking he has finally found a friend, Lester begins to feel happy for the first time in years and begins to draw pictures for her. One night, Lester goes to find Judie to ask her if she wants to be his girlfriend. Before he even has a chance to ask her, he sees his worst bully drunkenly kiss her. Judie sees Lester, who is running away in grief. Knowing there's nothing left for him anymore, the pressure of it all finally mounts and Lester swirls into a jealous rage and screams at his mother's latest boyfriend. He chases Lester into the cornfields outside his home and viciously strangles him to death then hangs him, making it look like a suicide, leaving his corpse near a scarecrow.

Bill (Thomas Favaloro), an independent film director, discovers waitress Gloria (Chelsea Turnbo) in a Hollywood eatery and casts her in the lead role of Kim in his new film, Sunset Dreams, which is financed by his friend Rod (Alan Bagh), a Silicon Valley entrepreneur, and Rod's wife, Nathalie (Whitney Moore). Shortly into production of Sunset Dreams, a toxic rain falls on Hollywood which causes preserved killer birds and cavemen to emerge out of the La Brea Tar Pits and zombies to come to life in a nearby cemetery. Bill, Gloria, Rod and Nathalie make their way around Hollywood with a dwindling band of survivors, fighting off the various threats before the birds eventually cease attacking and fly away.
