Fejos made The Last Moment on a budget of US$13,000. The film told its story without intertitles, which was very unusual for a silent film, and its use of double- and triple-exposures and expressionistic editing gave it a style that was not common for commercial releases of that period. Charlie Chaplin saw the film in a private screening and arranged for it to be theatrically released by United Artists. No print of The Last Moment is known to exist in any archive or private collection, and it is considered a lost film.
Synopsis
A man drowns himself in lake. As he is dying, he recalls the crucial moments of his life and the incidents that led to his final, fatal decision. His unhappy childhood, his tumultuous decision to leave home and stow away on an ocean freighter, his unsuccessful attempts to become an actor, and his two tumultuous attempts at married life are relived. The film ends with the man walking towards the lake and wading deeper and deeper into its waters until he is no longer visible from the shore.Actors

In New York, Mary is a telephone operator who lives alone and is lonely. Jim is a factory worker who lives alone and is lonely. Each decides to go to the beach (presumably Coney Island) and both are captivated with each other, eventually realizing, moreover, that they really do like each other. Having gone from loneliness to finding love, enjoying the company of each other and having fun, they are – due to exigent circumstances and hundreds of visitors to the beach that day – both separated from the other. Only knowing each other's first name, and having only a small photo of each other, Jim and Mary are desperate to find each other. Will these two lonesome individuals who have discovered their love for each other.

In the film, Conrad Veidt stars as Erik the Great, a sinister stage Magician who falls in love with a woman half his age, Julie, played by Mary Philbin. A young thief, Mark Royce (played by Fred MacKaye) is caught stealing from Erik's apartment and is taken in at Julie's suggestion. Secretly she falls in love with the new apprentice. However, Erik's other apprentice, Buffo (played by Leslie Fenton) becomes aware of Julie's love for Mark, and driven by jealousy tells his master. Buffo is later found killed, and Mark is the prime suspect.

Sao is a nurse who comes to work at an older, rundown hospital in Bangkok. Witnessing her arrival is Num, a disabled orderly. Num is shy, but a little girl selling roses convinces him to buy one. He gives her money and the girl in turn gives the rose to Sao, forming a bond between the two. Sao takes room in an old house behind the hospital, near a disused gymnasium and the old morgue. She is getting over a breakup with an old boyfriend who left her because she turns into a ghost. And, indeed, unbeknownst to her, she does turn into the krasue ghost that very night, scaring the hospital's security guard.
