It has been written and directed by Matthew Holmes and stars Jack Martin in the title role of Ben Hall, a legendary bushranger in Central West New South Wales. He is considered one of Australia's most notorious bushrangers and has become a significant part of Australian folklore.
The Legend of Ben Hall also stars Jamie Coffa as John Gilbert, and William Lee as John Dunn, who were the only gang members riding with Ben Hall at this stage of his career.
The film focuses on the last nine months of Ben Hall's life after he was a well-established bushranger and was riding with gang members John Gilbert and John Dunn. The Legend of Ben Hall also explores the various circumstances surrounding Ben Hall's controversial death on May 5, 1865. The script was written with great care to be a historically accurate portrayal of the man and his notorious gang. It will be the second independent feature film by director Matthew Holmes, who wrote, directed and produced Twin Rivers in 2007, an Australian period drama set in Depression-Era New South Wales.
The Legend of Ben Hall is produced by Two Tone Pictures and Running Panda Films, along with Odin's Eye Entertainment, RLC Motion Picture Entertainment with Emu Creek Pictures and SunJive Studios.
Greg Mclean, director of Wolf Creek and Wolf Creek 2, joined the production as Executive Producer in early 2015.
Synopsis
After two years on the road and with the law closing in around him, Ben Hall has gone in hiding and is considering surrender. However, he is drawn back into bushranging by the reappearance of his old friend and gang member, John Gilbert. Reforming the gang with a new recruit John Dunn, the trio soon become the most wanted men in Australian history after a series of robberies that result in the death of two policemen. Ben Hall also struggles to reconcile himself with his estranged son now living with his ex-wife and her lover. When the Government moves to declare the gang outlaws, the gang make plans to flee the colony before it's too late, but they are sold out by a trusted ally.Actors

The film started out with a young Ned Kelly rescuing a young boy from drowning. It then pans to the Australian bush with Ned talking about his father. He then awakens in the Australian outback and sees a white mare. He rides it into town, only to be arrested and subsequently imprisoned in 1871, for supposedly stealing the horse, even though it had actually been stolen by Wild Wright, Ned's friend.

Film historian Ina Bertrand suggests that the tone of The Story of the Kelly Gang is "one of sorrow, depicting Ned Kelly and his gang as the last of the bushrangers." Bertrand identifies several scenes that suggest considerable film making sophistication on the part of the Taits. One is the composition of a scene of police shooting parrots in the bush. The second is the capture of Ned, shot from the viewpoint of the police, as he advances. A copy of the programme booklet has survived, containing a synopsis of the film, in six 'scenes'. The latter provided audiences with the sort of information later provided by intertitles, and can help historians imagine what the entire film may have been like.

In 1923 Tennessee, two young boys, Rafe McCawley (Jesse James) and Danny Walker (Reiley McClendon), play together in the back of an old biplane, pretending to be soldiers fighting the Germans in World War I. After Rafe's father lands his biplane and leaves, Rafe and Danny climb into the plane and Rafe accidentally starts it, giving the boys their first experience at flight. Soon afterward, Danny's father (William Fichtner) comes to take him home. He calls Rafe a "stupid boy" and beats Danny. In an effort to protect Danny, Rafe hits Danny's father with an old propeller and calls him a "dirty German".
