Add to a movie listThe Longest Yard is a 1974 American sports comedy film directed by Robert Aldrich. Written by Tracy Keenan Wynn based on a story by producer Albert S. Ruddy, the film follows inmates at a prison who play football against their guards. Burt Reynolds played Paul "Wrecking" Crewe in the 1974 film and coach Nate Scarborough in the 2005 remake.
The 1974 original was also the basis for the 2001 film Mean Machine (a shortened version of the title used for the original's UK release), starring Vinnie Jones as Danny Meehan, based on the character of Paul Crewe, and featuring association football instead of American football.
Green Bay Packers legend Ray Nitschke appeared in the 1974 version as did the character actor George A. Jones.
The film was shot on location at Georgia State Prison, Reidsville, Ga. It had the cooperation of then-Governor, Jimmy Carter. Filming had to be delayed from time to time due to prison uprisings.
Synopsis
Paul "Wrecking" Crewe is a former star pro football quarterback, who walks out on his wealthy girlfriend Melissa in Palm Beach, Florida. He takes her Maserati-engined Citroën SM without permission and leads police on a car chase, choreographed by Hal Needham. Crewe is eventually caught and sentenced to 18 months in Citrus State Prison.Actors

Wealthy Texan Big Enos Burdette (Pat McCormick) and his son Little Enos (Paul Williams) seek a truck driver willing to bootleg Coors beer to Georgia for their refreshment. At the time, Coors was regarded as one of the finest beers in the United States, but it could not be sold legally east of the Mississippi River. In 1957, W.W. Bright (Burt Reynolds) is an easygoing crook who robs gas stations. He meets the Dixie Dancekings, a country music band, while fleeing from a policeman.
