The Lower Depths (French: Les Bas-fonds) is a 1936 French drama film directed by Jean Renoir, based on a play of the same title by Maxim Gorky. Its scenes contrast the life of the upper and lower classes to comedic effect.

Synopsis

Pépel est un voleur qui vit dans une pension des bas-fonds tenue par Kostileff, un recéleur. Il est aimé par deux femmes, deux sœurs, Vassilissa, épouse du receleur, une jalouse dont il est l'amant, et la pure Natacha, sœur de Vassilissa, qui l'aime secrètement. Lors d'un cambriolage, Pépel est surpris par le propriétaire des lieux, un baron ruiné, chez qui les huissiers doivent saisir, le lendemain, tous les meubles. Les deux hommes sympathisent et deviennent amis.

The Viceroy of a remote 18th century Peruvian town has purchased a magnificent golden coach from Europe. The Viceroy hints of his intention to give the coach to his mistress, the Marquise, but has decided to pay for it with public funds, since he plans to use it to overawe the populace and flatter the local nobility, who enthusiastically look forward to taking turns parading in it. By coincidence, the coach arrives on the same ship that carries an Italian commedia dell'arte troupe composed of men, women and children who perform as singers, actors, acrobats and comics. The troupe is led by Don Antonio, who also portrays the stock character of Pantalone on stage, and features Camilla, who plays the stock role of Columbina.

In 1885 France, chambermaid Celestine begins her new position at the Lanlaire family home, a rural mansion, with the intention of moving up the social ladder. Bourgeois Parisian, Latin Quarter bookseller, Edouard Lestingois, (Charles Granval), rescues a tramp, Boudu, from a suicidal plunge into the river Seine, from the Pont des Arts. Boudu is brought into Lestingois' household. The family adopts the man and dedicates itself to reforming him into a proper middle class person. Boudu (Michel Simon) shows his gratitude by shaking the household to its foundations, challenging the hidebound manners of his hosts and seduces not only the housemaid but also Madame Lestingois herself. Gradually Boudu is tamed, shaved and given a haircut, and put in a suit. Then he wins a large sum of money on the lottery, and is guided into marrying the housemaid. Finally however, at the wedding scene, Boudu capsizes a rowing boat and floats away from the wedding party, and "back to his old vagrancy, a free spirit once more.
