Add to a movie listThe Man Who Skied Down Everest is a documentary about Yuichiro Miura, a Japanese alpinist who skied down Mt. Everest in 1970. The film was produced by Canadian film maker Budge Crawley. Miura skied 6,600 feet (2000 m) in 2 minutes and 20 seconds and fell 1320 feet down the steep Lhotse face from the Yellow Band just below the South Col. He used a large parachute to slow his descent. He came to a full stop just 250 ft. from the edge of the crevasse.
The ski descent was the objective of The Japanese Everest Skiing Expedition 1970. Six members of this expedition died. At the same time, another independent Japanese expedition (called The Japanese Mount Everest Expedition 1970) undertook a combined ascent of (a) the normal route (including Naomi Uemura who made the summit) and (b) the first attempt at the South-West Face (this is the tall black face on the movie poster with the Y-shaped snowy gully). Two members of this second expedition died.
Crawley won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for this picture.
Miura also has a documentary skiing down Mount Fuji.
Synopsis
Yuichiro Miura, un skieur japonais, a rêvé de littéralement skier sur le mont Everest. Il prévoyait de skier quelque 8 000 pieds sur un glacier glacé à un angle de 40 à 45 degrés, à partir du niveau de 26 000 pieds près du sommet. Le documentaire relate cet exploit incroyable et l'énorme tâche de gravir l'Everest lui-même. Le narrateur lit le journal que le skieur a tenu personnellement. Le film a été produit par le cinéaste canadien Budge Crawley avec les images réalisées pour le documentaire japonais original de 1970 (Eberesuto dai kakko). Crawley a remporté l'Oscar du meilleur long métrage documentaire pour cette photo.Actors

Chasing the Horizon takes a look at a team's preparation for the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, one of the most grueling off-road racing events in the world. It is known as such because of the extreme conditions which the race is set in, the length of the race, and spectators have even been known to set up booby traps on the course for their own entertainment. The team that the film takes a look at is a rookie trio called Team Horizon. Milo Brown is an ex-con and junkyard owner but is also the team's captain. Jeff Lloyd was once a homeless man who went on to become a millionaire and racecar driver. Toby O'Mara serves as the team chief mechanic and co-driver, but he is also a plumber. The three men come together and form a sort of dysfunctional family to compete in this grand event. The film takes a look at the ups and downs of the crew's experiences in the days that lead up to the actual race and the viewer sees moments of laughter and comedy but also times of sadness.

The disaster occurred between 1 and 2 August 2008 and cost 11 lives. During the ascent of the summit a climber falls to his death in the Bottleneck. When three climbers try to collect the body one of them also falls to his death. These occurrences lead to a delay in the summit attempt that strands several climbers for the night above the Bottleneck, in the "deathzone" (above 8000 meters), due to a serac fall killing one more climber. The documentary takes a closer look at the more unknown happenings during the night and the next day leading to another eight deaths.
