The Measure of a Man (French: La Loi du marché) is a 2015 French drama film directed by Stéphane Brizé. It was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. At Cannes, Vincent Lindon won the award for Best Actor and the film won a commendation awarded by the Ecumenical Jury.

Synopsis

Thierry a married factory worker who has a disabled child. At the age of 51, he lands a new job as a security guard in a supermarket, after one-and-half years of unemployment. He tries to make ends meet in working-class France.

Suite à un grave accident de sport dans une piscine, Ben, devenu tétraplégique incomplet, arrive dans un centre de rééducation. Il fait la rencontre d'autres handicapés (tétraplégiques, paraplégiques, traumatisés crâniens), tous victimes d'accidents, ainsi qu'un handicapé depuis sa petite enfance. Entre impuissance, désespoir et résignation, dans la lutte quotidienne pour réapprendre à bouger un doigt ou tenir une fourchette, quelques-uns retrouvent lentement un peu de mobilité tandis que d'autres reçoivent le verdict du handicap à vie. Malgré tout, l'espoir et l'amitié les aident à supporter leurs difficultés.

Léo travaille en usine depuis l'âge de seize ans. Un jour, son chef d'atelier l'affecte sur une machine sur laquelle Léo n'avait pas encore travaillé, en lui ordonnant de bien lire les consignes de sécurité avant de l'utiliser. Problème : le chef ignore tout du handicap de Léo pour lequel il s'est toujours tu, il ne sait pas lire. Du coup, ne pouvant comprendre les instructions écrites de la nouvelle machine, Léo se blesse et se retrouve avec deux doigts sectionnés. Zorg (Jean-Hugues Anglade) is a 34-year-old failed writer, now making a living as a handyman for a community of beach houses at Gruissan. He meets Betty (Béatrice Dalle), a volatile and impulsive young woman, and the two begin a passionate affair, living in his shack on the beach. After a row with him, she finds the manuscript of a novel he once wrote and decides he is a genius. However, after another argument with his boss, she empties the shack and burns it down. The two decamp to the outskirts of Paris, where her friend Lisa (Consuelo de Haviland) has a small hotel. There they find work in the pizzeria of Lisa's friend Eddy (Gérard Darmon), but a fight erupts in which Betty stabs a customer with a fork. Back at the hotel, she laboriously types out Zorg's novel and submits it to various publishers. Though Zorg hides the rejection letters she finds one and, going to the publisher's house, slashes his face. Zorg induces him to drop charges.
