The film was selected as the Swiss entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 47th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee. It was screened at the 2011 International Filmfestival Mannheim-Heidelberg.
Synopsis
The married young Swiss politician Paul gives an election speech in a restaurant and falls in love with an Italian waitress named Adriana who works there. Their love affair becomes quickly public knowledge. Paul's wife abandons him and takes their child with her. His damaged reputation makes him lose the election. He seeks solace by concentrating on his relationship with Adriana, yet she feels she was only a kind of object for him and leaves him too.Actors

A young woman is accused of having shot her uncle, but she claims he accidentally shot himself while cleaning his gun. Two friends are commissioned to write a film script based on this incident. Each of them chooses an approach in accordance with his profession. The journalist interviews the young woman, yet her statements seem to be contradictory. The romancier just makes up some fictitious explanations which seem plausible, but when he gets to know the woman she's very different from what he has imagined. In the end both refrain from working on this film project.

Deux jeunes femmes suisses dans la vingtaine, de milieux très différents (l'une est étudiante en histoire et l'autre, commis) se rencontrent pendant qu'elles font de l'auto-stop. Elles voyagent dans la campagne suisse, cherchant une pause de leurs vies et leurs relations insatisfaisantes. On a flatbed lorry driven in the streets of London, a motor car is under a grey cover with the initials RR. The Rolls Royce is first purchased by Charles, Marquess of Frinton (Rex Harrison) as a 10th wedding anniversary present for his French wife, Eloise (Jeanne Moreau). Frinton is Under-Secretary of State at the Foreign Office. The marquess is a longtime horse owner who has his heart set on winning the Ascot Gold Cup. This year his horse, named 10 June (his wedding anniversary date; also the writer Terence Rattigan's birthday) is the favourite and does indeed win. Lord Frinton is presented the Gold Cup by King George V. However, his elation is blighted when he finds his wife with her lover, his underling John Fane (Edmund Purdom), in the back of the Rolls with the shades drawn. For appearance's sake, Lord Frinton will not divorce his wife, but he returns the car.

The film tells the story of Sissy Hankshaw, a woman born with a mutation (she would not call it a defect) giving her enormously large thumbs. The film is a transgressive romp, covering topics from homosexuality and free love to drug use and political rebellion to animal rights and body odor and religions. Sissy makes the most of her thumbs by becoming a hitchhiker. Her travels take her to New York, where she becomes a model for a transvestite feminine hygiene products mogul, known as The Countess, who introduces her to the man whom she will marry, an asthmatic, staid Mohawk named Julian Gitche. In her later travels, she encounters, among many others, a sexually open cowgirl named Bonanza Jellybean and an itinerant escapee from the Japanese internment camps happily mislabeled "The Chink".

The film opens with a series of still photographs appearing over melancholic music, representing the abstract memories of the unseen Herman Raucher, now a middle-aged man. We then hear Raucher recalling the summer he spent on the island in 1942. The film flashes back to a day that then 15-year-old "Hermie" and his friends – jock Oscy and introverted nerd Benjie – spent playing on the beach. They spot a young soldier carrying his new bride into a house on the beach and are struck by her beauty, especially Hermie, who is unable to get her out of his mind.
