Il est présenté en ouverture au neuvième festival du film francophone d'Angoulême, en août 2016.
En 2017, le film reçoit le César du meilleur son.
Synopsis
Après avoir quitté la Marine nationale française, Jacques-Yves Cousteau veut se lancer dans l'exploration sous-marine. En 1950, il loue le bateau Calypso à un riche britannique. Le « commandant » part alors aux quatre coins du Monde, avec sa femme Simone et notamment Albert « Bebert » Falco. Ses deux fils, Philippe Cousteau et Jean-Michel Cousteau, restent en pension... Quelques années plus tard, Philippe rejoint finalement l'équipe de son père, qui tourne une série de films documentaires financés par une chaîne de télévision américaine. Philippe étant sensibilisé à l'écologie à laquelle son père est insensible, il se brouille avec lui puis, alors que les affaires de Jacques-Yves périclitent, revient auprès de lui et le sensibilise à la protection des océans et des espèces animales menacées, donnant à la carrière de son père une nouvelle orientation et un nouveau départ.Actors

Un cargo est bloqué à quai avec son équipage de marins étrangers dans le port de Marseille. Chacun attend que l'armateur consente à débloquer de l'argent pour payer les salaires. Les marins ont le choix entre attendre encore un temps indéfini ou toucher une partie de leur solde et rentrer chez eux. La plupart d'entre eux optent pour la deuxième solution. Restent à bord le capitaine, Abdul, et son second, Diamantis. Peu de temps après ils assistent au retour de Nedim, qui s'est fait dépouiller de son passeport et de son argent dans un bar de nuit. Les trois hommes vont vivre à bord, mais en l'absence du travail et de la vie en mer qui les unissaient, ils vont être amenés à se recentrer chacun sur eux-mêmes, ce qui mènera le capitaine au bord de la folie.

Five French soldiers are convicted of self-mutilation in order to escape military service during World War I. They are condemned to face near certain death in the no man's land between the French and German trench lines. It appears that all of them were killed in a subsequent battle, but Mathilde, the fiancée of one of the soldiers, refuses to give up hope and begins to uncover clues as to what actually took place on the battlefield. She is all the while driven by the constant reminder of what her fiancé had carved into one of the bells of the church near their home, MMM for Manech Aime Mathilde (Manech Loves Mathilde; a pun on the French word aime, which is pronounced like the letter "M". In the English-language version, this is changed to "Manech's Marrying Mathilde").

The setting is in the year 1927. After her father dies, a young American heiress, Dale disguises herself as a man and takes the place of her father in an international car race through the Sahara. The American Buckley-class destroyer escort USS Haynes detects and attacks a German U-boat that is on its way to rendezvous with a German merchant raider in the South Atlantic Ocean. Captain Murrell (Robert Mitchum), a former officer in the merchant marine now an active duty lieutenant commander in the Naval Reserve, has recently taken command of the Haynes, even though he is still recovering from injuries incurred in the sinking of his previous ship. Before the U-boat is first spotted, one sailor questions the new captain's fitness and ability. However, as the battle begins, Murrell shows himself to be a match for wily U-boat Kapitän von Stolberg (Curt Jürgens) (portrayed as not being enamoured with the Nazi regime) in a prolonged and deadly battle of wits that tests both men and their crews. The story is told from the viewpoint of Lt. Werner (Herbert Grönemeyer), who has been assigned as a war correspondent on the German submarine U-96 in October 1941. He meets its captain (Jürgen Prochnow), chief engineer (Klaus Wennemann), and the crew in a French nightclub. Thomsen (Otto Sander), another captain, gives a crude drunken speech to celebrate his Ritterkreuz award, in which he openly mocks not only Winston Churchill but implicitly Adolf Hitler as well.

In 1961, the Soviet Union launches its first ballistic missile nuclear submarine, the K-19. The ship is led by Captain Alexei Vostrikov, aided by executive officer Mikhail Polenin. Polenin, the original captain, and the crew have served together for some time but Vostrikov's appointment is alleged to have been aided by his wife's political connections. During his first inspection, Vostrikov discovers the submarine's reactor officer to be drunk and asleep on duty. Vostrikov sacks the officer and orders Polenin to request a replacement. The new reactor officer, Vadim Radtchenko, arrives direct from nuclear school having just been fresh from the naval academy, annoying Polenin who thinks Vostrikov was too punitive on the former reactor officer who was competent despite his momentary lapse of judgment. Also, during the preparation period for the sub's launch, the ship's medical officer is killed when struck by an oncoming truck, and is subsequently replaced by the command's foremost medical officer, an army officer who has graciously offered himself in the submarine's time of need, but also privately admits to Vostrikov that as an army officer he has never been out to sea and suffers from motion sickness. During the K-19's official launch, the bottle of champagne fails to break when it strikes the bow; the sailors nervously glance at each other due to this customary sign of bad luck.

On July 2, 1937, Amelia Earhart (Hilary Swank) and her navigator, Fred Noonan (Christopher Eccleston), are on the last leg of an around-the-world flight. Moving in vignettes from her early years when Earhart was captivated by the sight of an aircraft flying overhead on the Kansas prairie where she grew up, her life over the preceding decade gradually unfolds. As a young woman, she is recruited by publishing tycoon and eventual husband, George Putnam (Richard Gere) to become the first woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean, albeit as a passenger. Taking command of the flight results in a success and she is thrust into the limelight as the most famous woman pilot of her time. Putnam helps Earhart write a book chronicling the flight, much like his earlier triumph with Charles Lindbergh's We. Earhart gradually falls in love with Putnam and they eventually marry, although she enacts a "cruel" pledge as her wedding contract.
