Synopsis
Dans le village côtier de Santa Bibiana, le moindre malentendu peut dégénérer en fusillade mortelle. Entre les familles Anguiano et Menchaca, le torchon brûle. Gerardo Anguiano, médecin idéaliste, choisit d'installer son cabinet en ville. Hospitalisé dans un poumon d'acier, il reçoit la visite de Rómulo Menchaca. Le père de Gerardo a, autrefois, assassiné celui de Rómulo et ce dernier exige réparation. Gerardo, refusant cette alternative, est alors giflé par Rómulo. Flash-back : on explique l'origine de cette guerre incessante qui déchire les deux clans familiaux. Felipe Anguiano, fiancé de Mercedes, s'est vu contraint de tuer Filogonio Menchaca et de traverser le fleuve pour s'enfuir dans le désert. Surpris par un Menchaca, Felipe est, à son tour, abattu. Fin du flash-back. Revenu au village, Gerardo parvient à maîtriser Rómulo sans utiliser d'armes. Le cycle de la violence est enfin interrompu et les deux hommes finissent par fraterniser. Convaincu, Rómulo s'établit en ville afin d'y vivre en paix.Actors

The film opens in Mexico, in the home of an upper-class antiques salesman named Don Carlos Montero and his wife Rosario, whose son, Carlos or Carlitos, is accused of stealing by the principal of his school. Carlitos is scolded harshly by his father when he comes home, and is locked in his room. Carlitos runs away, but is found by an engineer named Julio Mistral who works in the forest. Julio returns the boy to his parents, and Don Carlos is very grateful. Julio becomes great friends with the Montero family, but in private asks Rosario why she really married such a harsh mannered and older man.

Archibaldo de la Cruz (Alonso) is a wealthy Mexican man. As a privileged child during the Mexican Revolution, he witnessed the death of his governess, who died as she told him a fable about a music box that his mother had just given him. Because of the contents of the story and the coincidental timing of the governess's death, a young Archibaldo concludes that he had killed the woman using the music box. In a small town in the south of France, Dr. Valerio is committed to caring for the poor. His young wife, Angela, cannot stand the place and wants to move to Nice, but the doctor does not want to leave before finding a replacement. Valerio is sympathetic to the working poor of the area, particularly Sandro, a farm worker who maintains the trees belonging to Gorzone, a rich industrialist and the primary employer in the town. Angela becomes ill and wanders the town's slum quarters in a delirium, ultimately leaving the town for a holiday without her husband. The Commissioner of Police takes Valerio to a mountain village in order to sign medical reports for a little girl who had been raped by her grandfather. There, Valerio meets Clara, a rich young widow. He considers a menage a trois, but is rebuffed. Meanwhile, Sandro is dismissed by Gorzone, forcing Sandro and his tubercular wife, Magda, to leave their home, a move that results in Magda's death. Distracted by grief, Sandro shoots Gorzone. Valerio hides Sandro from the police, a decision that results in Angela leaving the doctor for good. Sandro leaves Valerio's protection and, when cornered by the authorities, shoots himself. Valerio refuses to shake hands with the Commissioner, and the last scene shows Valerio and Clara walking away at night, arm in arm on the quayside, followed by some of Sandro's cronies.

Chark, un aventurier européen, arrive dans une bourgade d’un pays imaginaire d'Amérique latine, situé près de la frontière avec le Brésil, et où sont exploités des gisements de diamants. À ce moment, une révolte se prépare. Les prospecteurs de diamants, spoliés par l’État et dépouillés de leurs biens par le capitaine Ferrero, un despote corrompu, se préparent à attaquer la garnison gouvernementale. Chark, accusé de vol, est conduit à la garnison et incarcéré, mais il parvient à s’évader. Les prospecteurs attaquent la garnison mais l’armée envoie des renforts et l'attaque échoue. Les rebelles doivent fuir. Chark se joint à certains d’entre eux : Castin, un vieux prospecteur français que les diamants ont enrichi ; Maria, sa fille sourde-muette ; Djin, une prostituée que Castin voudrait épouser ; le père Lizardi, un prêtre missionnaire. Pour ce faire, ils s’emparent du bateau d’un trafiquant à la solde des militaires qui les trahira rapidement. Les fugitifs doivent abandonner le bateau et partir à pied dans une jungle touffue. Dans cet environnement hostile, les fugitifs ne savent pas exactement où aller. Ils ont l'intention de rejoindre le Brésil, mais leur situation devient de plus en plus désespérée. Alors qu’ils sont perdus, Chark part en éclaireur et découvre, au bord d’un lac situé à la frontière du Brésil, les restes d'un avion qui s’est écrasé en forêt récemment. Mais Castin est devenu fou ; il tue la prostituée puis le père Lizardi avant que Chark le tue à son tour. Chark et Maria essaient de gagner le Brésil dans un canot pneumatique.

A stylish, attractive young woman, Célestine (Jeanne Moreau), arrives from Paris to become chambermaid for an odd family at their country chateau. Gerardo (Jorge Negrete) and his friend Demetrio (Julio Villarreal) are a pair of footloose cowboys in turn-of-the-century Mexico who are in prison on dubious charges. As Gerardo sings and strums on his guitar, Demetrio saws the bars of their cell, enabling them to escape. They come upon a small oil field operated by José Enrique (Francisco Jambrina), an entrepreneur from Argentina who is refusing to sell out to evil oil barons who threaten the workers. Gerardo persuades José to give work to him and his friends, and after he and Demetrio recruit more workers, they're able to rejuvenate the struggling operation. Just as their fortunes are on the rise, however, the oilman disappears and is feared murdered. Demetrio takes over the operation next, but, again, the night before the oil is to start pumping, he goes to the casino and falls for Camelia (Mercedes Barba), the same girl José was last seen with before he vanished, and he too disappears.
