It tells the story of 16th century's Venice where a young worker is sentenced to death on the suspicion of attacking a noble.
Synopsis
Venise, en 1507. Le comte Alvise Guoro, débauché notoire, vient d'être assassiné. Pietro, un jeune boulanger, découvre son cadavre et se voit accusé du meurtre. Il avait en effet menacé le comte, qu'il soupçonnait d'être l'amant de sa fiancée, Annella. Le comte Lorenzo Parma, membre du Conseil des Dix, accepte d'assurer la défense de Pietro. Assisté par sa maîtresse, la belle comtesse Sofia Zeno, il commence sa propre enquête. Il apparaît rapidement que la moitié au moins de l'aristocratie vénitienne avait de bonnes raisons d'en vouloir à Guoro. Pourtant, le procureur Garzoni s'obstine à réclamer la tête du jeune Pietro.Actors

Following the disappearance of his beautiful but mentally handicapped daughter, Avanzio Berzaghi (Raf Vallone) travels to Milan to track her down. The king of Crete, Cadmos, has just murdered his wife in order to live with his scheming lover Ermione. For this deed, a prophetess curses him in the name of the gods, foretelling him that the man his infant daughter Antiope would one day fall in love with will eventually be his doom. Furious at the gods' judgement and unable to kill Antiope on the spot (lest the curse would fulfill itself immediately), megalomanic Cadmos renounces the gods and proclaims himself one.
