The Silent Voice is a seven-reel silent film melodrama produced in 1915 by Quality Pictures and distributed by Metro Pictures. The motion picture was directed by William Bowman and was adapted from the Jules Eckert Goodman play, The Silent Voice, by I. K. Freedman and Eve Unsell.

Goodman’s play, that originally starred Otis Skinner, was based on the Gouverneur Morris short story, The Man Who Played God which also served as the geneses for the 1932 film The Man Who Played God and the 1955 Liberace vehicle, Sincerely Yours.

The Silent Voice was released on September 13, 1915 with Francis X. Bushman and Marguerite Snow in the principal roles.

Synopsis

The Silent Voice tells the story of Franklyn Starr, a gifted musician who becomes embittered after he is stricken with a sudden onslaught of deafness and then suffers the loss of his beloved mother. He soon retreats to a remote cottage in the country with his loyal servant Spring to live out his life as a recluse.

A Corner in Cotton tells the story of Peggy Ainslee, the daughter of a wealthy New York cotton broker, and John Carter, the son of a Southern cotton mill owner. Peggy grows weary of society life and decides to help improve the lot of the poor by becoming involved with the Settlement movement. She later travels south to investigate working conditions at Carter’s cotton mill. Peggy manages to gain employment there, but soon attracts the unwanted advances of the mill foreman. John saves her from the would-be masher and the couple eventually fall in love. This becomes a problem with their fathers who had become business antagonist. In the end Peggy and John married after she foils her father’s attempt to ruin Carter by cornering the market in cotton and then persuades the two men to settle their differences.

Based upon a description in a film publication, Katherine Van Riper (Clayton) is an extravagant young society girl who is very much in debt, and her wealthy aunts and uncle refuse to give her any money. Katherine is desperate enough that she is considering marrying the wealthy Montee Buck (Hiers), although she is in love with the westerner Tom Jaffrey (Fillmore), who says he is poor. Finally, Katherine decides to sell the famous Van Riper pearls, pay off her debts, and marry Tom. However, upon examination the jewelry turns out to be paste, with her father having sold the genuine pearls several years earlier before his death. Montee is assured by the aunts that Katherine will marry him and tells this to Tom. Tom is about to leave town when Uncle James (Ricketts) steps in and pays off Katherine's debts, leaving the niece free to marry Tom.
