Die Straße (1923), also known as The Street, is a German silent film, directed by Karl Grune.

Synopsis

This was the first of the German "street" films. Prints of the film do exist, distributed by Transit Film GmbH for commercial screenings, despite claims to the contrary. There are few intertitles throughout the film, adding to the predominantly visual story-telling approach.

Steyer mène une vie retirée dans les Monts des Géants : avec ses parents, sa seconde épouse Ludmilla et sa fille Ænne née d'un premier mariage, il exploite une mine. Mais Ludmilla n'a épousé Steyer que pour l'argent : elle est soumise au chasseur Lauer, qu'elle continue de voir en secret. Lorsque Steyer découvre son infortune et qu'il surprend Lauer devant la mine, il interroge vivement sa femme. Celle-ci nie tout et lui dit que Lauer vient en réalité voir Ænne ; le soir, elle emmène son mari danser pour lui prouver son amour. Steyer, rentré saoûl, n'a plus qu'une idée : fiancer sa fille Ænne à Lauer, et revendre sa mine. Il s'aperçoit trop tard de sa méprise : sa maison est vendue, Ludmilla a disparu avec Lauer et lorsqu'il s'en retourne vers la mine, ses parents déménagent. Il a tout perdu en l'espace d'une nuit.

Au centre de l'action, il y a un bâtiment typique du Berlin des années 1920. Un bijoutier et un avocat vivent dans les étages inférieurs. L'étage suivant, il y a une veuve et un fonctionnaire. Les deux locaux commerciaux sont une école de danse et une agence de rencontres. Tout en haut, sous le toit vivent les locataires les plus pauvres : un vendeur de ballons et un professeur de piano ruiné après l'inflation. L'immeuble représente donc la société, ses besoins et ses antagonismes de classe.
